2-Day Zion Narrows Dry Bib Rental Package – Stay Dry from Ankles to Armpits
Pick up your gear the afternoon before your first hike (as early as 3:00 PM MST, subject to availability) and return it by shop close on your second day. Keep in mind that dry bibs don't insulate on their own—pack appropriate synthetic or wool layers for both days based on expected conditions.

- Early pickup available the afternoon before (as early as 3:00 PM MST) if your sizes are in stock

FAQs
When should I choose dry bibs over the footwear package?
Dry bibs are recommended from approximately October 1st through mid-May—whenever river temperatures are cool and you want to stay dry from the waist down. In mid-summer when water temperatures are warmer, the footwear-only package is usually sufficient. If you're unsure, staff will assess current conditions at pickup and help you make the call.
What's the difference between dry bibs and a dry suit?
Dry bibs cover you from ankles to armpits—a very high level of protection. A dry suit goes further, sealing at both the ankles and the wrists, meaning even fully submerged arms stay dry. The main practical difference is security: with dry bibs, very deep sections or a stumble could still let water in over the top. A dry suit eliminates that risk entirely and is recommended for winter or higher water conditions when you want zero concern about depth.
Do dry bibs keep me warm?
Dry bibs block water, but they don't insulate on their own. You'll need to wear appropriate synthetic or wool base layers underneath. Staff will advise on layering based on the day's conditions—thinner layers in fall/spring, thicker thermals in winter.
Can water still get into dry bibs?
Yes—dry bibs have latex gaskets at the ankles, but they're open at the top. If you wade into water deeper than your armpits (rare, but possible in high-water conditions) or take a tumble, water can get in. For full peace of mind in deep winter or elevated water flow, consider the Dry Suit Package instead.
How deep does the water get?
It varies by season and river flow. Staff check conditions daily and will give you a current read at pickup. The park closes the bottom-up route when flow exceeds 150 CFS. Under typical shoulder-season conditions, most of the hike is ankle- to knee-deep with occasional waist-deep sections.
Can I pick up gear the evening before?
Yes—if your sizes are available, pickup is possible as early as 3:00 PM MST the afternoon before your hike. This is recommended for early starts. Top-down Narrows hikers taking a pre-dawn shuttle must pick up gear the evening before.
Do I need a permit for the bottom-up Narrows hike?
No permit is required for the bottom-up route from the Temple of Sinawava. Permits are required for the top-down route and overnight trips.
What about flash floods?
Flash floods are the primary safety hazard in The Narrows. Water levels can rise 12 feet in minutes during a storm anywhere in the watershed. Always check conditions at the Visitor Center or with staff before heading in, and exit the canyon if weather builds. During August, exit the river by early afternoon.
