Kayak Rental on the Napa River – Downtown Napa Main Street Dock

Most people discover Napa Valley through a windshield or a wine glass. The Napa River offers a third option — and it's the one locals tend to keep to themselves. Launching from the Main Street Dock in the heart of downtown, this kayak rental puts you directly onto a calm, tidal river flanked by wetlands, historic bridges, and some of the best wildlife watching in the valley. Paddle north past the Oxbow Preserve and its dense riparian habitat, or drift south past downtown's riverfront restaurants and tasting rooms. There's no wrong direction — just calm water, fresh air, and a version of Napa Valley that most visitors never see.

The Napa River is beginner-friendly throughout the downtown stretch. Staff provide a safety briefing and tide conditions before you launch, so you're set up confidently from the start. Single and tandem kayaks are available in 2-hour, half-day (4-hour), and full-day (8-hour) rentals — choose the length that fits your plans. Dogs are welcome with prior arrangement. The dock is ADA-accessible, with free parking a short walk away and restrooms at the General Store at 540 Main Street.

Duration

2-hour, 4-hour (half-day), and 8-hour (full-day) rentals available. Select your duration at checkout. Arrive at least 10–15 minutes before your rental start time.

FAQs

Do I need prior experience to rent a kayak on the Napa River?

No prior experience is needed. The downtown Napa section of the Napa River is calm, flat, and well suited for first-time paddlers. The kayaks are stable and beginner-friendly, and the team provides a safety briefing and route overview before you launch. If you'd prefer a guided experience with narration and local history, guided kayak tours are also available from the same dock.

What wildlife can I see while kayaking on the Napa River?

The Napa River is one of the most wildlife-rich waterways in California wine country. Keep your eyes open for river otters, beavers, turtles, deer, and harbor seals. Birdlife is exceptional — Great Blue Herons, Snowy Egrets, ducks, hawks, and the occasional bald eagle or golden eagle are regularly spotted from the water. The Oxbow Preserve section north of downtown is particularly rich in native flora and fauna.

What is the best time of year to kayak on the Napa River?

The river can be enjoyed year-round, but conditions vary:

  • Spring (March–May): Mild temperatures, active wildlife, and green riverbanks make this one of the most scenic times to paddle.
  • Summer (June–September): Warm mornings are ideal — launch early to enjoy calm water and increased chances of seeing river otters and birdlife.
  • Fall (October–November): Cooler temperatures and beautiful golden light during harvest season make for a peaceful, atmospheric paddle.
  • Winter: It does get chilly — dress in layers and be prepared for cooler water temperatures.

Do I need to book in advance?

Reservations are strongly recommended during peak season (spring through fall) and on weekends.

What types of kayaks are available?

Both single and tandem (2-person) kayaks are available. Tandems are a great option for couples, parent-child pairs, or anyone who'd prefer to paddle with a companion. Both styles are stable, sit-on-top kayaks suited to flat-water paddling on the Napa River. Fishing kayaks are also available — these are purpose-built sit-on-top models with rod holders, bungee straps, paddle seating, and dry wells, ideal for guests planning to fish the river during their rental.

Where can I paddle from the Main Street Dock?

From the Main Street Dock, you can paddle in either direction along the Napa River:

  • North toward the Oxbow Preserve: A protected ecosystem rich in native wildlife — herons, egrets, river otters, and lush riverbank vegetation. A peaceful, scenic stretch ideal for wildlife watching.
  • South toward downtown and beyond: Paddle past downtown Napa's riverfront restaurants, tasting rooms, historic bridges, and the Trancas Street area where the river widens toward the estuary. This stretch has more boat traffic but beautiful views of the city from the water.

The team will provide route suggestions tailored to tide conditions and your rental duration before you launch.

Can kayaks be taken to other locations?

No — kayaks must be launched and returned from the Main Street Dock only. Kayaks may not be taken overnight or to third-party locations.
