Adventure Through Tanama River Caves: Mukaro Cave & Cueva del Arco in Utuado!

Jump right in on the Mukaro Cave Adventure, a half-day exploration of the Tanamá River’s caves, waterfalls, and mountain trails. Hike approximately 3.5 miles through rugged terrain, tackling steep hills, easy climbs, and boulder-strewn paths while taking in the lush Northern Karst scenery.

Explore caves and caverns, including the stunning Cueva del Arco, and trek through the river, hopping in and out of cool spring waters along the way. Swim through narrow canyons, hike along rock walls, and try optional free jumps into natural pools for an adrenaline boost.

Our location is near the Caguana Ceremonial Indigenous Heritage Center.
Notice If you are using a GPS or following Google maps directions and you are driving on road #10 South do not make a right turn on road #10 in KM 47 before the bridge. This exit will take you to a very narrow road. Continue driving until you reach the traffic light.
Our meeting point will be at our private location with free, secure parking. We also have a store where you can get water and healthy snacks. Restrooms and changing rooms available. We open the doors at 7:45 am.

Ages & Requirements

Minimum age for this tour is 8 years old.
This hiking tour is not for everyone! Almost 4 miles total hiking distance in a mountain region with about 20 minutes of hiking downhill in a slippery and steep area.
Good Physical condition is necessary. The most challenging part is the hiking part. People from 8 years old to 78 years old have accomplished this tour.
We have a weight limit of 240 lbs (109 kg). Our most important concern is the physical condition of our participants, not the weight. Good physical condition is necessary to participate in all our tours.

What to Bring / Wear

Have a good rest the night before, have a good breakfast the day of your adventure with us, be on time, and come with a positive attitude to experience one of the best nature adventures in Puerto Rico in terms of river, caves, history and culture.
Bring a small backpack with water and snacks! You can get water and snacks at our store, or bring your own please. *Water and snacks are MANDATORY for the tour.*

Sturdy Hiking Shoes, Sneakers, or Water Shoes (NO Open-Toed Shoes or Flip Flops) - Broken in/Used before with closed toes and grippy tread!
Hiking Socks & Gaiters - Comfortable socks to prevent blisters and small shoe gaiters are helpful to keep rocks and sand from getting into the shoe and causing blisters or cuts!
Comfortable Clothing / Change of Clothing (No Jeans) - Make sure the clothing is moisture-wicking, lightweight, and fast drying!
Sun & Insect Protection - Rimmed hat, sunglasses, neck covering (may attach to hat), and UV deflecting long sleeve shirts can all help to combat the harmful and strong sun rays! Don’t forget some insect repellent or mosquito head coverings!
Required Paperwork & ID Cards- Signed medical form if required, waivers, license, etc.
Restroom Essentials - Extra toilet paper and hand sanitizer is a good idea!
Trekking Poles - These can help on uneven ground or strenuous hikes!
Cameras & Binoculars - Catch amazing pictures of the scenery and binoculars to spot wildlife from far away! If you are river trekking or swimming, ensure you have a waterproof camera with a floating handle in case it gets dropped!
Dry Bags - Recommended anywhere you might get rained on to protect valuables like your phone and cameras.
Snacks - Please always consider bringing your own, especially if you have a food allergy, stomach issues to certain foods, or are particular about your food preferences!

No, this tour does not involve any rappelling. All activities are focused on hiking, river trekking, swimming, easy rock climbing, and exploring caves and canyons. The routes are designed for accessibility to anyone comfortable with moderate physical activity, basic swimming skills, and navigating natural river and forest terrain. Optional free jumps into natural pools are included for extra adventure, but no ropes or technical climbing equipment are required.

What kind of wildlife might I see in the Mukaro Cave & Cueva del Arco?

Cancellation Policy

Customers will receive a Full refund only when the Cancellation is made by Tanama River Adventures Company. Customers can receive 75% refund or credit with 72 hours or more notice of cancellation prior to the Tour (this mean three days or more before the Tour start at 8:30 am). Any cancelations after 72 hours prior to the Tour will be eligible for an 50% refunds. Cancellations the same date of the Tour will be consider a no show up with no refunds. No refunds for cancellations made at the same date of the Tour. Customers will also receive a full refund or credit in case of operator cancellation due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances that will make Tanama River Adventures company to make cancellation.
