Bike The Bridge & Muir Woods Tour Combo — San Francisco

Two of the best half-days in the Bay Area, combined into one package. The morning takes you into Marin County's ancient redwood forest; the afternoon puts you on a bike along the waterfront with the Golden Gate Bridge ahead of you. Neither experience requires you to rent a car, navigate parking, or figure out logistics — it's all handled.

The day starts early at Fisherman's Wharf, where a shuttle carries you across the Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods National Monument — home to old-growth coast redwoods that tower up to 260 feet (79 m) and stretch back over a thousand years. Ninety minutes in the park to walk the cathedral-like groves at your own pace, with Muir Woods National Monument admission included. The shuttle then continues to Sausalito for over an hour of free time on the waterfront — lunch, coffee, galleries, or simply sitting by the harbor — before returning to San Francisco by around 12:45 PM.

In the afternoon, or on a different day of your choice, pick up a bike at the Bay Street location and head out on your own. The recommended self-guided route follows the Bay Trail from the Embarcadero and Ferry Building along the waterfront through the Presidio and Crissy Field to Fort Point, then up and across the Golden Gate Bridge — the same bridge you crossed by shuttle in the morning, now under your own power. The bike is yours for the whole day.

The two components don't have to happen on the same day, giving real flexibility for guests working around weather, energy, or itinerary.

Duration

  1. Morning — Muir Woods shuttle tour: approximately half a day; check-in at 7:50 AM, departure 8:00 AM sharp, return to Fisherman's Wharf approximately 12:45 PM
  2. Afternoon — self-guided bike rental: all day from pickup (available from 8:00 AM at 501 Bay Street); bikes must be returned by closing time (hours vary by season — confirm at check-in)
  3. Bike rental can be used the same day as the Muir Woods tour or on a separate day — flexibility is built into the package
  4. Self-guided biking distance: 5 – 25 miles (8 – 40 km) depending on your chosen route

Location / Where to Meet

Muir Woods shuttle check-in: 2805 Leavenworth Street, San Francisco, CA 94133 — in the Fisherman's Wharf area. Check in by 7:50 AM; shuttle departs at 8:00 AM sharp. There is no physical storefront at this location — look for the shuttle and tour staff on the street.

Bike pickup: 501 Bay Street, San Francisco, CA 94133 — the Bay Street location at the Powell/Mason Cable Car terminus, a short walk from the shuttle check-in point. Available from 8:00 AM daily; bring a valid photo ID and credit card for the rental deposit.

Ages & Requirements

  1. Suitable for all ages — beginner friendly for both components
  2. Muir Woods involves walking on unpaved and paved trails; terrain is relatively flat along the main trail; dress in layers as the redwood forest is often cool and shaded
  3. Children's equipment available for the bike rental including tag-a-longs, child seats (front handlebar), bike trailers, and independent kids' bikes; staff will fit you at check-in
  4. E-bike upgrades available for the bike rental for ages 13 and older; available on-site for an extra fee
  5. Guests should be comfortable riding a bike independently for the self-guided bike component

What's Included

  1. Shuttle transportation from Fisherman's Wharf to Muir Woods National Monument and Sausalito, and return to Fisherman's Wharf
  2. Muir Woods National Monument admission
  3. 90 minutes of self-guided exploration time in Muir Woods
  4. Free time in Sausalito (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes)
  5. All-day self-guided bike rental with helmet, front handlebar bag, rear rack with bungee cords, bell, water bottle holder, lock, and detailed route map
  6. Staff route briefing and bike fitting at pickup

Not Included

  1. Ferry ticket from Sausalito back to San Francisco — if you choose to stay longer in Sausalito after the shuttle tour and return by ferry independently, tickets can be purchased in Sausalito; ferry runs multiple times daily (schedule varies seasonally)
  2. E-bike upgrade for the bike rental (available on-site at the Bay Street location for an extra fee)
  3. Meals and drinks in Sausalito or elsewhere
  4. Gratuity — never expected, but if you have a great experience, please consider gifting 10–25% to your shuttle guide and bike shop staff

What to Bring / Wear

  1. Layers for Muir Woods — the redwood forest is cool, shaded, and often 10–15°F (5–8°C) cooler than San Francisco; a light jacket or fleece is essential even on warm days
  2. Comfortable walking shoes suitable for unpaved forest trails for the Muir Woods portion
  3. Comfortable, layered cycling clothing for the bike portion — the waterfront and bridge can be windy; rear bike racks with bungee cords are included to stow extra layers
  4. Closed-toe shoes suitable for pedaling — the same walking shoes work fine for casual cycling
  5. Sunglasses and sunscreen
  6. Small daypack — useful for carrying layers, water, and snacks across both activities
  7. Rain jacket or light poncho — both activities run in light rain; ponchos are available for purchase at the bike shop if needed
  8. Valid photo ID and a credit card for the bike rental deposit
  9. Fully charged phone — useful for navigation on the self-guided ride

FAQs

Do both activities happen on the same day?

They can, but they don't have to. The Muir Woods shuttle returns to Fisherman's Wharf around 12:45 PM, leaving the afternoon free for the bike rental if you have the energy. Alternatively, the bike rental can be used on a completely separate day — the flexibility is built into the package. If splitting across two days, contact the shop to confirm the bike pickup date.

What is Muir Woods and why is it worth visiting?

Muir Woods National Monument is a federally protected old-growth coast redwood forest in Marin County, about 12 miles (19 km) north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge. The trees in the park are among the tallest living things on Earth, with some reaching 260 feet (79 m) and living over 1,000 years. Access to the park is limited by the National Park Service to protect the ecosystem — shuttle or advance parking reservations are required, which is part of what makes this package convenient.

What will I see in Muir Woods?

The main trail through the park follows Redwood Creek through the old-growth forest floor — a cathedral of towering trunks, filtered light, and fern-covered banks. You'll have 90 minutes to walk the paths at your own pace. The main loop is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) and is flat and accessible; longer connecting trails extend further into the hills for those who want to explore more.

What is there to do in Sausalito during the free time?

Sausalito is a charming bayside village with waterfront cafes, art galleries, boutique shops, and sweeping views back across the bay to San Francisco. About 1 hour 15 minutes is included — enough for a relaxed lunch or coffee and a walk along the waterfront.

What route do you recommend for the self-guided bike ride?

Staff will brief you on the best route for your timeframe and ability at pickup. The most popular option follows the Bay Trail from the Bay Street shop along the Embarcadero, past the Ferry Building, through the Presidio and Crissy Field to Fort Point, then across the Golden Gate Bridge. From there you can return to the shop (approximately 10 – 12 miles / 16 – 19 km round trip) or continue down into Sausalito — the same town you visited earlier in the day, now seen from the saddle of a bike instead of a shuttle window.

Can I stay in Sausalito after the shuttle tour and take the ferry back?

Yes — if you want to linger longer than the 1 hour 15 minutes included in the shuttle itinerary, you can stay independently and return by ferry. The Sausalito–Fisherman's Wharf ferry carries passengers (not bikes for this portion, as the bike pickup is separate) and runs multiple times daily. Ferry fare is not included in the package.

Will the shuttle and bike rental run in the rain?

The shuttle tour operates rain or shine. The bike rental is also available in all weather. Light rain is common in the Bay Area and doesn't significantly impact either experience — Muir Woods in particular is beautiful in overcast conditions. Ponchos are available for purchase at the bike shop if needed.
