Description

Magical Mountain Lakes 2.0 - Private Mountain Lake Hike – Intermediate/Advanced

Rocky Mountain National Park holds more than 150 alpine lakes, and this hike is built to get you to one of the more memorable ones — the kind with sheer granite walls rising straight out of the water and a reflection so clean it barely looks real. This is a longer, more committing route than the shorter lake hikes, covering more distance and elevation to reach lakes that see fewer visitors.

Your guide leads the way through varied mountain terrain, sharing the history, geology, and plant and wildlife knowledge that brings the landscape to life along the trail. Once you reach the lake, there's time to take it in — snap photos, sit with the view, or, if you've brought a rod, cast a line into water that's home to plenty of trout. Whether you're chasing a personal record on distance or just want a bigger, wilder mountain lake experience, this hike is built to deliver it.

FAQs

What is this hike about?

This is a longer, more physically demanding hike to one of Rocky Mountain National Park's more remote alpine lakes, with sheer mountain backdrops reflected in the water. It covers more ground and elevation than the outfitter's shorter, family-friendly lake hikes.

Which lake will we visit?

Rocky Mountain National Park has over 150 lakes, and your guide selects the destination for your trip based on trail conditions, weather, and your group's pace and goals at the time of booking.

Can I fish while on this hike?

Yes — many of the park's mountain lakes are home to trout, and you're welcome to bring a fly rod. State and Federal fishing laws and permits apply if you choose to fish on your own during the trip.

Do I need prior hiking experience for this trip?

This is rated an intermediate-to-advanced hike, with more distance and elevation gain than the outfitter's shorter routes. It's best suited to hikers comfortable spending a full day on varied mountain terrain.

Will we see wildlife on this hike?

Sightings aren't guaranteed, but the trails and lake areas are good habitat for elk, marmots, pikas, and bighorn sheep, and your guide will be watching for wildlife throughout the trip.

What can I expect to see and do on a guided hike?

Beyond the hiking itself, your guide shares knowledge of the local history, geology, flowers, and trees, and keeps an eye out for wildlife along the way. If animals are spotted while driving and it's safe to stop, your guide will pull over so the group can observe from a safe distance. Elk, mule deer, marmots, pikas, and bighorn sheep are commonly seen, with moose and other wildlife possible as well.

Are your guides certified?

Yes. Guides are professional, trained, and Wilderness First Aid/CPR-certified.

How big are the groups, and will I be with strangers?

Every trip is a private, custom trip booked exclusively for your party — you won't be combined with other travelers. Group sizes run from 1 to 9 people, based on Rocky Mountain National Park's group-size regulations for a single certified guide.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, advance booking is recommended, especially during the busy summer season, to ensure guide and date availability.

Do I need a park pass?

You'll need a valid park pass or to pay the park entrance fee, but since you're on a guided trip, a timed-entry permit is not required — your guide handles that reservation for your group. Credit or debit is required at the park entrance; cash is not accepted.
