Description

Morning Dolphin & Snorkel Combo Tour — Key West

Start your day with the best double-header the Florida Keys have to offer. This 3-hour morning adventure takes you straight to the Dolphin Playground — the local hotspot for Key West's resident dolphin pods — before heading out to one of the most vibrant sections of the Florida Keys Barrier Reef for a full guided snorkel. You're back at the dock by midday with your afternoon still free and a memory that'll outlast the sunburn.

After departing from the marina, your captain navigates to the Dolphin Playground, where local pods are known to swim, jump, and ride the bow wave right alongside the boat. Wild dolphins, up close, behaving naturally — it's consistently one of the most talked-about moments guests experience in Key West. From there, the boat heads to a prime coral reef site within the Florida Marine Sanctuary. Dive into crystal-clear turquoise water teeming with sea turtles, eagle rays, and hundreds of species of tropical reef fish. All gear is provided and the crew gives expert instruction before you hit the water.

Once you've had your fill of adventure, cold draft beer and soft drinks are served as you cruise back through the scenic Key West harbor. The perfect morning.

FAQs

Are we guaranteed to see dolphins on the morning trip?

Dolphins are wild animals, so sightings can never be 100% guaranteed. However, Key West has large, established resident dolphin pods and your crew actively tracks their locations daily. Dolphin sightings are very common on this tour throughout the year.

Can we swim with the dolphins?

No — swimming with dolphins is illegal in the Florida Keys. You'll observe them from the boat, and your captain will get you as close as safely possible. Most guests find this experience more intimate than they expected.

What marine life can I see while snorkeling?

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is home to over 500 marine species. Expect sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, parrotfish, queen angelfish, moray eels, tarpon, grouper, sergeant majors, yellowtail snapper, and more.

What is the best time of year to see dolphins in Key West?

Dolphins are resident in Key West year-round. They're especially active during warmer months (spring through fall), but sightings are common in winter too.

Do dolphin eco tours run year-round?

Yes. Key West's warm, dolphin-rich waters make this a great year-round activity in any season.

Do I need to book in advance?

Booking in advance is strongly recommended, especially during peak season. Trips can and do sell out, and walk-up availability is not guaranteed.

Are there restrooms available?

Yes — all boats are equipped with above-deck modern marine restrooms.

Can I bring my own snorkel gear?

Yes, you are welcome to bring your own mask and snorkel. Rental gear is also included with your ticket.

Do I need to know how to swim to snorkel?

While formal swimming ability isn't a hard requirement, it is strongly recommended that you are comfortable in open ocean water. Flotation devices are available if needed. Please inform your guides if you are not a confident swimmer.

Can I snorkel with a beard or mustache?

You can, but facial hair can prevent a tight mask seal and allow water to leak in. It's recommended to shave at least your mustache before the trip. If you'd prefer not to, bring petroleum jelly or chapstick to coat your mustache and improve the seal.

Can I wear glasses or contacts while snorkeling?

Contacts are perfectly fine and often the best option for seeing clearly underwater. Glasses cannot be worn under a snorkel mask. If you have a prescription mask, feel free to bring it — rental shops typically don't carry them. Fun fact: everything appears about 25% larger and closer underwater.

What sunscreen should I use?

Please use reef-safe, non-nano mineral sunscreen. Common sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens are harmful to coral and banned in many Florida Keys areas. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard as an alternative.

How do we get in and out of the water?

The boat is equipped with two large ladders deployed from the back. Getting in and out is straightforward. For those who want a more exciting entry, there are also spots to jump in.
