Description

Molokini Crater Snorkeling Tour (With Seasonal Whale Watching Bonus)!

Spend your morning snorkeling the world-famous Molokini Crater, one of Maui’s most remarkable marine sanctuaries. This 2-hour snorkeling adventure takes you out on the Makena Mele II, a fast and exciting 40-foot (12 m) ocean speed raft, designed to get you to the reef quickly so you can spend more time in the water. Inside the crescent-shaped volcanic crater, you’ll snorkel above thriving coral gardens in waters ranging from 10 to 70 feet (3 to 21 meters) deep, where hundreds of species of tropical fish, rays, and other marine life make their home.
Your crew will assist with properly fitting your premium snorkeling gear and provide flotation devices if desired, ensuring everyone feels comfortable before entering the water. Once in the crater’s famously clear water, you’ll have time to explore the reef and observe the diverse marine life that makes Molokini one of the most sought-after snorkeling spots in Hawaii.
From December 15 through March 30, the tour is extended by an additional 30 minutes to include a bonus whale-watching experience, making the total tour length approximately 2.5 hours during those dates. Maui’s humpback whale season brings incredible opportunities to see these massive animals breaching, tail-slapping, and surfacing along the coastline. Complimentary snacks, tropical juices, and bottled water are provided during the extended tour. Outside of whale season, the trip remains a 2-hour Molokini snorkeling tour focused entirely on the reef experience.
Please note that access to Molokini is weather permitting, and if conditions are not safe for the crater, the crew will choose an alternate snorkeling location such as Turtle Town to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.

Please also be respectful of any marine animals including but not limited to turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins. Please never chase, harass, feed, or TOUCH any of the marine species. Enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path.

FAQs

Why is snorkeling at Molokini so exciting?

Molokini Crater is one of the most famous snorkeling locations in Hawaii because of its unique volcanic formation and incredible water clarity. The crescent-shaped crater sits partially above the ocean’s surface and forms a natural barrier that protects the reef from large waves and strong currents. This creates calm conditions and exceptionally clear water, often with visibility reaching 100 feet (30 m) or more, allowing snorkelers to see coral formations and marine life in remarkable detail.

The crater is also a protected marine sanctuary, which means fishing and other activities that could disturb the ecosystem are limited. As a result, the reef supports a thriving underwater environment filled with coral gardens, schools of tropical fish, and other marine species. Because the water inside the crater ranges from about 10 to 70 feet (3 to 21 m) deep, snorkelers of many experience levels can comfortably explore the reef.

Another reason Molokini is so exciting is its location offshore from Maui’s south coast. The ride out on the ocean raft is part of the adventure itself, and once you arrive, you’re snorkeling inside the partially submerged rim of an ancient volcanic crater—an experience that is rare anywhere in the world.

What wildlife might we encounter at Molokini?

Molokini Crater is home to more than 250 species of fish, making it one of the most biologically diverse snorkeling areas in Maui. While floating above the reef, snorkelers often see colorful tropical species such as yellow tang, parrotfish, butterflyfish, triggerfish, and Moorish idols moving through coral formations.

The reef also provides habitat for other fascinating marine life including moray eels, octopus, starfish, and occasionally manta rays gliding through deeper sections of the crater. The area’s healthy coral ecosystem supports 38 species of hard coral and more than 100 types of algae, creating a rich environment where marine life thrives.

While wildlife sightings vary from day to day, snorkelers may also spot Hawaiian green sea turtles, seabirds diving for fish above the crater, and occasionally dolphins or whales in the surrounding waters depending on the season. Every trip is a little different, which is part of what makes snorkeling at Molokini so memorable.

Why is the bonus whale watching only from December 15th to March 30th?

The bonus whale-watching portion of the tour is offered only between December 15 and March 30 because this is when North Pacific humpback whales migrate to Maui’s waters each year. These whales travel thousands of miles from their feeding grounds near Alaska to Hawaii’s warm waters to breed, give birth, and care for their calves.

During this time, the waters around Maui become one of the best places in the world to observe humpback whales. You may see them breaching, tail-slapping, or surfacing to breathe, and their powerful blows can often be spotted from a distance. Because the whales are present so reliably during these months, the tour includes an additional 30 minutes dedicated to watching for whale activity along the coastline.

Outside of this seasonal migration, humpback whales return to colder northern waters, which is why the whale-watching portion of the tour is only available during the winter months.

So we won’t be whale watching during the summer? How long is the tour then?

Correct. During the summer and fall months, humpback whales are typically not present in Maui’s waters, so the whale-watching portion of the tour is not included.

Outside of whale season, the trip operates as a 2-hour snorkeling tour focused entirely on Molokini Crater. You’ll still enjoy the fast raft ride, snorkeling in Molokini’s clear water, and exploring the crater’s coral reef ecosystem with the guidance of the experienced crew.

From December 15 through March 30, the tour is extended to approximately 2.5 hours to include the additional whale-watching time. During the rest of the year, the adventure remains a 2-hour Molokini snorkeling experience centered around the reef and marine life inside the crater.

What should I do if I see turtles, dolphins, or other large marine life near me?

All Hawaiian sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act, which means it is important to observe them responsibly. Snorkelers must maintain a distance of at least 10 feet (3 m) from turtles at all times. It is illegal to touch, chase, ride, feed, or otherwise disturb them.

If a turtle approaches you while snorkeling, the best thing to do is remain calm and gently move yourself about 10 feet (3 m) away, giving the animal space to continue its natural behavior. Turtles are curious and may swim near snorkelers, but it’s important to avoid blocking their path or interfering with them.

The same respectful approach applies to other wildlife such as dolphins, seals, and whales. If these animals come close, calmly create space and enjoy the moment from a distance. Never attempt to chase, touch, feed, or harass marine life. Observing wildlife responsibly helps protect these species and ensures future visitors can enjoy these incredible encounters.

Can I bring a waterproof camera?

Yes, you are welcome to bring a waterproof camera or phone in a waterproof case to capture your experience. Molokini’s clear water and abundant marine life provide incredible photo opportunities, both above and below the surface.

However, it’s important to ensure your equipment is fully waterproof and securely attached to you. The ride to and from the snorkel sites can be fast and occasionally bumpy aboard the ocean raft, so cameras should be secured with a wrist strap or float attachment whenever possible.

Please note that you are responsible for your personal equipment. The crew cannot guarantee the safety of phones, cameras, or other electronics if they are lost or damaged during the trip.

What is the temperature of the water in Hawaii?

The ocean temperature around Maui generally ranges between 74–82°F (23–28°C) throughout the year. During the winter months, water temperatures are usually closer to 74–76°F (23–24°C), while late summer and early fall can reach 80–82°F (27–28°C).

Most guests find the water very comfortable for snorkeling, especially with Maui’s warm tropical climate. Some people prefer to wear a light rash guard or wetsuit top for additional warmth and sun protection during longer snorkeling sessions.

Can a woman snorkel on her period? Is there danger from sharks?

You can absolutely snorkel while on your period. The sharks are not a problem as it takes a LOT of blood to attract a shark. A bigger problem is that there is not a head (bathroom) on the boat, so it may be best to plan your snorkel carefully.

What kinds of sharks are in Hawaii and are they harmful?

The most common sharks you are likely to see on a snorkel off of Maui are White-tip reef sharks. They are not harmful at all and are beautiful and graceful to watch. On occasion we also see Grey Sharks, which are also great to watch and pose no threat to people. The Tiger Shark is the one that occasionally attacks swimmers, but has never been reported to harass people and in fact, when approached underwater, often turns and swims away. There are Hammerhead sharks at various parts of the island, but are not seen on trips at Molokini or the Makena Coast.

What is your safety record?

Oddly enough, we get asked about everything from sunscreen to tourist tips but rarely are we asked about our safety policies and record. We have been in the business for nearly 30 years and have an immaculate safety record. While having fun and exciting trips is a high priority, the safety of our guests is our number one priority.

What is the experience of your staff?

Most boat charter tours have a similar profile with some variations. What truly shapes your experience is the crew. Makena Coast Charters has been in business for over 30 years, and our crew excels in the water, with boat duties, and in customer service.

Can I bring my snorkel equipment to use on the tours?

Full face masks are NOT allowed. Of course you can use your snorkeling gear. Many people use their own mask, snorkel and fins, but there is no discount for bringing your snorkeling gear.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.

Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’

Can I snorkel with a mustache or beard?

You can snorkel with a beard or mustache but it can prevent a tight seal between the mask and your face, which may cause water to leak in. It is often recommended to shave at least your mustache before diving. If you’d prefer not to shave your mustache, please bring petroleum jelly or chapstick with you. If you coat your mustache in that chapstick or jelly, it may be able to seal and prevent water from getting in.

Can I wear glasses or contacts while snorkeling?

Glasses cannot be worn while snorkeling, but contacts are perfectly fine and recommended for the best experience. Prescription masks are not available for rent, but you are welcome to bring your own.

Additionally, there is an automatic correction effect that occurs underwater due to light refraction, making things appear clearer, but contacts or a personal prescription mask will provide the best visibility.
