Molokaʻi Hammerhead Shark Dive – Private Scuba Charter
Pricing
Includes up to 6 Passengers
Description
Drift into Hammerhead Territory off the Wild Coast of Molokaʻi!
Few dive boats ever make the crossing to Mokuho'oniki, and that's exactly what makes it special. This rugged remnant of an ancient cinder cone rises off the southeastern coast of Moloka'i, a seabird sanctuary above water and a current-swept, pristine reef below, known for schooling hammerhead sharks and fish so dense that divers call it "Fish Rain."
The day begins at Ma'alaea Harbor with a scenic run along the West Maui coast to Kapalua, where your group gets a full dive briefing in a calm bay before crossing the Pailolo Channel. Two drift dives follow, riding the current past healthy coral, volcanic topography, and swim-through terrain while you scan the blue for hammerheads, reef sharks, rays, dolphins, and even Hawaiian monk seals.
Between dives, lunch is served in the lee of the islet while rarely seen seabirds circle the cliffs overhead. It's a remote, expedition-style day that ends with stories few divers get to tell.

Wildlife Guidelines
Please be respectful of the fact that coral is a living organism and any standing, touching, or knocking over will irreparably damage the organism that takes a very long time to grow and is essential to our marine reefs. Please also be respectful of any marine animals including but not limited to turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins. Please never chase, harass, feed, or TOUCH any of the marine species. Enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path.

FAQs
Where is Mokuho'oniki?
Mokuho'oniki is a small islet off the southeastern coast of Moloka'i, the remains of an ancient cinder cone. Above water, it's a seabird sanctuary. Unlike Molokini, few boats cross the Pailolo Channel to reach it, which makes it all the more special for those who do.
What marine life can I see when diving at Mokuho'oniki?
Mokuho'oniki is known for schooling hammerhead sharks and pristine coral reefs with fish so plentiful that divers call it "Fish Rain." You may also encounter reef sharks, rays, Hawaiian monk seals, and dolphins, and seabirds like red-footed boobies are often seen around the islet.
Are we guaranteed to see hammerhead sharks?
Hammerheads are wild animals, so sightings can never be guaranteed. Mokuho'oniki is one of the best places in Hawaii to look for them, and the reef, fish life, and volcanic topography make the trip worthwhile on every dive.
What makes this an advanced dive?
Both dives are drift dives in an area where currents can be strong, and the site is remote, with a channel crossing to get there. That's why a minimum of 25 logged dives, a recent dive within the last 3 months, and the ability to climb the boat ladder quickly and unassisted are required.
Should I dive with your crew before this trip?
A previous dive aboard the boat is recommended so you know the boat and crew before this advanced dive.
What happens if conditions aren't right at Mokuho'oniki?
The captain may substitute a different dive site based on the day's conditions or the group's skill level.
Can I bring my own scuba gear?
Yes. All scuba gear is included, but you're welcome to bring any personal gear or wetsuit you prefer to use.
Can I fly after diving?
Flying directly after scuba diving is incredibly dangerous and could result in a life-threatening illness called the Bends/Decompression Sickness. The Divers Alert Network (DAN) guidelines for flying after diving include:
- A single no-decompression dive, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000 ft (305 m) interval of 18 hours suggested.
- Multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000ft (305m) interval of 24 hours is suggested.
- Dives requiring decompression stops are recommended to have longer than 18 hours.
Please discuss with your dive guide ahead of time what is suggested!
Can I go hiking or visit Haleakala after diving?
Any activity that brings you above 1000 ft (305 m) can trigger the Bends/Decompression Sickness. Please check your hike elevation to ensure that at no time you will be going up in elevation. If the hike does go to elevation, you must treat it like a preflight interval as listed above in the flying FAQ.
How early should I arrive?
Please check in 30 minutes before departure. Our standard departure time for dive and snorkel charters is 7 a.m., because ocean conditions are usually best in the morning. Since every trip is a private charter, we can adjust the departure time to fit your plans.
Where do we meet?
We meet at Slip 14 in Ma'alaea Harbor, Maui's centrally located small boat harbor. Head to the ocean side of the harbor, past the boat ramp and around the corner. We're on the wing of the harbor that looks out at the bay. Look for our 40 ft (12 m) orange rigid-hulled inflatable boat.
Is parking available?
Yes. Paid hourly parking is available near our slip, and dockside spots are usually open before 7 a.m.
Is there a restroom on the boat?
No. Please use the harbor restroom before departure.
What kind of boat will we be on?
Our boat is a 40 ft (12 m) rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB), custom designed and built by our captain. The engine sits mid-ship rather than hanging off the back, so the weight is balanced and the boat glides over waves for a much smoother ride than a typical RHIB. Open seating gives everyone unobstructed views, and the boat is quick enough to reach Lana'i in about an hour.
How many people can join a charter?
We take a maximum of six passengers per trip. Private charters are a flat rate, so the price is the same whether you bring two people or six, and the entire boat is reserved for your group.
Who will be on the crew?
Your group will have a captain, a guide, and an additional crew member. On dive charters, the scuba guide leads your group underwater while the extra crew member can serve as a snorkel guide or as a "bubble watcher" on drift dives. You may request an additional scuba guide for your group.
Can divers and snorkelers share the same charter?
Yes. Because the boat is yours for the day, we can personalize the trip for mixed groups and combine snorkelers and divers on the same charter.
What is included in the price?
Our charters include all the gear you need, taxes, fees, and food and drinks. Nitrox is not included, but it is available upon request for an extra fee.
What food and drinks do you provide?
On our longer charters, catering includes deli sandwiches (turkey, ham, roast beef, or veggie), fresh fruit, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, locally made granola bars, hot cocoa, soft drinks, juices, and water. Please let us know in advance about any allergies or dietary preferences.
Will I get wet on the ride, and where can I keep my belongings?
Occasional sea spray is possible on the ride, so bring a windbreaker or light jacket. We provide drybags for your personal items. Please leave larger items ashore.
What do you do to protect Maui's ocean?
We partner with Maui conservation nonprofits, including Pacific Whale Foundation and Maui Nui Marine Resource Council. Through reef cleanup dives with our partners, more than 2,700 lbs (1,225 kg) of lead, fishing line, and other marine debris have been removed from Maui's reefs. We also provide boat support for reef surveys, coral outplanting, and water quality monitoring, and our captain melts down recovered lead to make our dive weights.
Do your guides speak other languages?
Yes. Our captain also speaks Spanish.
What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems. Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled 'non-nano.'
