Mōkapu Beach Outrigger Canoe & Snorkeling Tour

Description
Paddle the Wailea Coast, Then Dive into South Maui’s Underwater World!
Experience Maui from both sides of the surface on an adventure that combines traditional outrigger canoe paddling with an extended guided snorkel along the Wailea coastline. Launching from Mōkapu Beach, you'll begin with paddle in hand before trading the canoe for mask and fins and spending plenty of time exploring South Maui's underwater world.
Your guide starts with the basics of outrigger paddling before your group pushes off from the beach aboard a traditional-style six-person canoe. As everyone settles into a rhythm, you'll paddle along the coastline while learning about the history and cultural significance of outrigger canoeing in Hawaii and across Polynesia. Keep an eye on the surrounding water as you go—you never know what marine life may appear along the way.
After reaching the snorkel area, swap your paddle for a mask and fins and slip into the warm Pacific. Your guide joins you in the water, helping point out Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu), tropical reef fish, octopus, sea urchins, and other creatures hiding among the reef and lava formations. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but South Maui offers plenty to search for beneath the surface.
With more time dedicated to snorkeling, you'll have the chance to slow down and actually explore rather than simply taking a quick dip before returning to shore. Your guide remains nearby throughout, helping identify marine life and assisting guests who may need a little extra confidence in the water.
Combining Hawaiian paddling traditions, coastal scenery, and an extended guided snorkel, this is a great choice for families, couples, and first-time visitors who want to spend a bigger part of their Maui morning discovering what lies beneath the Pacific.

FAQs
How is the two hours split between paddling and snorkeling?
The tour runs about 30 minutes of paddling and instruction, followed by roughly 90 minutes of in-water snorkel time.
What other marine life might we see while snorkeling?
In addition to Hawaiian green sea turtles, keep watch for tropical reef fish, moray eels, octopus, sea urchins, and other creatures living around South Maui’s coral and lava formations. What you see varies from day to day, which is part of the fun of exploring a natural reef.
Do I need previous outrigger canoe or snorkeling experience?
No previous outrigger paddling experience is necessary. Your guide will show you how to paddle and coordinate with the rest of the canoe before heading out. Guests should, however, be comfortable swimming and snorkeling in the ocean, since part of the experience takes place in open water.
What is an outrigger canoe, and how many people does it hold?
An outrigger canoe is a traditional Polynesian-style canoe featuring a smaller side float, called an ama, connected to the main hull to provide additional stability on the ocean. This tour uses six-person outrigger canoes, giving you the opportunity to paddle together as a group before stopping to explore the reef by snorkel.
