Description

Happy Hour Sunset Kayak Tour – Mississippi River, Minneapolis, MN

Some of the best moments on the Mississippi happen right at the end of the day. This 1.5-hour evening paddle launches from Boom Island marina as the light turns golden, and ends as darkness falls over the Minneapolis skyline — a short, scenic, and genuinely magical way to spend a summer evening on the river.

A lighter version of the Heart of Minneapolis tour, this paddle begins in the magic hour and stays in and out of the Boom Island marina. As the sun drops, long shadows stretch across the water and soft orange glows settle on the downtown skyline behind you. Your guide will share some of the history that makes this stretch of river so special, while the city winds down around you and the river takes on a whole different character after hours.

At 1.5 hours and launching from Boom Island with no shuttle, this is one of the most accessible and budget-friendly kayaking tours in Minneapolis — perfect for a first-time paddler, a date night on the water, a family outing, or anyone looking for a quick escape from the city without going far. No experience needed, and no long commitment required. Just show up, paddle out, and let the river do the rest.

FAQs

What is the Happy Hour Sunset tour route?

This is an out-and-back tour that begins and ends at Boom Island marina. The route follows the same stretch of river as the Heart of Minneapolis tour — heading upriver past Nicollet Island and under the downtown bridges — but in a shorter, more relaxed format timed to the evening light. You'll be on the water as the sun sets and the city skyline catches its golden hour glow.

Is this tour suitable for beginners and families?

Yes — this is one of the most approachable tours offered. The route is calm, the pace is relaxed, and the 1.5-hour duration makes it easy for younger paddlers and first-timers. Children age 5 and up are welcome in tandem kayaks with an adult paddler 18 or older.

Is this a good date night option?

Absolutely — the sunset timing, the city skyline, and the quieter pace of the evening river make this one of the most popular choices for couples. No prior experience needed, and the whole experience wraps up in about 1.5 hours, leaving plenty of time for dinner afterward.

Will photos be taken during the tour?

Yes! Your guide carries a waterproof camera and will take photos of your group during the paddle. You're also welcome to bring your own waterproof camera. A dry bag and cell phone cases are provided for items you want to keep close but protected from the water.

Where can I leave my personal belongings during the tour?

A dry bag is available to store small personal items you'd like to keep with you on the water. Leave larger items and valuables in your vehicle at the Boom Island Park parking area.

What is your season length?

We start guide training at the end of April and offer tours from May through mid-October, weather and river conditions permitting.

What if the weather turns bad?

The route and duration of all our tours are subject to flexibility depending on weather conditions, water level, flow rate, and group dynamics. Our guides take all of these elements into account to make everyone’s experience enjoyable and safe. We will be in communication at least 24 hours before a trip if we foresee needing to adjust, reschedule, or cancel.

Do your guides accept tips?

Our guides always appreciate tips. Guests typically do 15-20%. Cash is generally easiest and many guides also accept e-payment methods like Venmo or PayPal.

Are your guides certified?

Your guides are all certified by the American Canoe Association (ACA), trained in water rescue and first aid, and bring years of experience leading paddlers of all abilities on the Mississippi. Founded in 2018, this locally owned guide collective is deeply passionate about the river, its ecology, and its history — and that shows in every stroke.

Cancellation Policy

Guests must notify staff within 12 hours of trip to be offered a full refund. All of our trips follow weather safety guidelines, so if cancellation is due to weather concerns, we will offer to either refund or rebook.
