Description

Mississippi River Gorge Kayak Tour – Minneapolis, MN

The Mississippi River Gorge is unlike anywhere else in the Twin Cities — and kayaking through it is unlike anything you can experience on land. This 3-hour guided paddle takes you through the only natural gorge on the entire length of the Mississippi River, a canyon-like corridor flanked by 150-foot (46 m) sandstone and limestone bluffs carved over 12,000 years by the same waterfall that put Minneapolis on the map.

Your adventure begins with a shuttle pickup outside Sea Salt Eatery at Minnehaha Falls Regional Park. After a short drive up to Bohemian Flats Park, your guides will lead a safety and paddling demo on shore before setting you off on a 6.5-mile (10.5 km) journey downriver through one of the most geologically dramatic stretches of the Upper Mississippi.

As you paddle, your guides bring the gorge to life — pointing out the 150-foot (46 m) bluffs above, the ruins of the old milling district, the iconic Stone Arch Bridge (built in 1883 as a railroad crossing and now one of the oldest bridges on the river), and the stretch of water that powered the rise of Minneapolis as an industrial city. The gorge is part of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, a federally designated stretch of river running through the heart of the Twin Cities.

The tour's engineering centerpiece is Lock and Dam No. 1 — also known as Ford Dam — the largest active lock on the entire Mississippi River. You'll descend approximately 36 feet (11 m) through the lock chamber, a slow and dramatic elevator ride on the water that few visitors to Minneapolis ever experience. A quick-flowing mile past the lock, the tour ends at Hidden Falls Regional Park, where your shuttle returns you to Sea Salt Eatery.

This is one of the most adventurous kayaking tours in Minneapolis, best suited for paddlers with a bit of experience or those ready for a bigger challenge. The gorge moves with more current and energy than the calmer northern stretches of the river, and the full 6.5-mile (10.5 km) route demands sustained paddling.

  • Approximately 3 hours total, including shuttle to the put-in, land-based paddling and safety introduction, the paddle itself, and return shuttle to Sea Salt Eatery

FAQs

What is the Mississippi River Gorge Adventure route?

You'll meet at Sea Salt Eatery at Minnehaha Falls Regional Park, where your guide will shuttle you north to the put-in at Bohemian Flats Park. From there, you'll paddle 6.5 miles (10.5 km) downstream through the Mississippi River Gorge — the only natural gorge on the entire length of the Mississippi — passing sandstone bluffs, historic bridges, and the ruins of the old milling district before descending through Lock and Dam No. 1. The tour ends at Hidden Falls Regional Park, where the shuttle returns you to Sea Salt Eatery.

What makes the Mississippi River Gorge so special?

The gorge is the only naturally occurring gorge on the entire Mississippi River, carved over 12,000 years by the retreat of Saint Anthony Falls. The bluffs rise 150 feet (46 m) above the water on both sides, and the gorge is part of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area — a federally protected corridor running through the heart of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Paddling through it offers a perspective on the city that is impossible to get any other way.

What is Lock and Dam No. 1, and what is it like to go through it?

Lock and Dam No. 1 — also called Ford Dam — is the largest active lock on the entire Mississippi River. Near the end of the tour, you'll paddle into the lock chamber and descend approximately 36 feet (11 m) as the water level is lowered, effectively riding an elevator on the river. It's one of the most unique engineering experiences available on any kayak tour in the country, and a highlight guests consistently call out in reviews.

Is this tour suitable for beginners?

This tour is recommended for paddlers with some prior experience or those who feel confident taking on a bigger challenge. The gorge has more current and energy than the calmer northern stretches of the river, and the 6.5-mile (10.5 km) distance requires sustained paddling. If you're brand new to kayaking, the Heart of Minneapolis or City of Birds tours are better starting points.

Is shuttle service included?

Yes — shuttle service is included both ways. Your guide picks you up at Sea Salt Eatery and drives you to Bohemian Flats Park at the start, then returns you to Sea Salt Eatery from Hidden Falls Regional Park at the end.

Will photos be taken during the tour?

Yes! Your guide carries a waterproof camera and will take photos of your group during the paddle. You're also welcome to bring your own waterproof camera or a GoPro in a waterproof case. A dry bag and cell phone cases are provided for items you want to keep close but protected from the water.

Where can I leave my personal belongings during the tour?

A dry bag is available to store small personal items you'd like to keep with you on the water. Leave larger items and valuables in your vehicle at the Sea Salt Eatery / Minnehaha Falls Regional Park parking area.

Can I grab food at Sea Salt Eatery before or after the tour?

Sea Salt Eatery is a beloved seasonal seafood restaurant located right at your meeting point in Minnehaha Falls Regional Park. It's a great spot to grab a bite before the paddle or celebrate after — just keep in mind that it's a popular destination, especially on weekends, so plan accordingly.
