About This Trip
This 2.5 hour guided paddle starts at East Greynolds Park and we’ll paddle through some towering mangrove tunnels in search of local wildlife and marine life. As you exit the mangrove tunnels you’ll enter a maze of mangroves which is the perfect sanctuary for fish, rays, and more. The shallow waters are great for seeing through the kayak in search of wildlife!
Mangroves are a group of salt-tolerant trees and shrubs that grow in coastal areas around the world, including in Miami, Florida. Mangroves play an important role in the ecosystem by providing habitat for a wide variety of wildlife and helping to protect coastlines from erosion. In Miami, mangroves can be found along the Biscayne Bay and other coastal areas.
There are three main species of mangroves found in Miami: red mangroves, black mangroves, and white mangroves. Red mangroves, which are the most commonly found species in Miami, have prop roots that help to stabilize the soil and protect the coast from erosion. Black mangroves, on the other hand, have pneumatophores, or “breathing roots,” that stick out of the soil and allow the trees to take in oxygen in the low-oxygen environment of the mangrove swamp. White mangroves, the least common species in Miami, are typically found in areas with less salt.
Manatees, also known as sea cows, can be found in the waters around Miami, particularly in Biscayne Bay and along the coast of Florida. These gentle creatures are an important part of the ecosystem and are protected under the Endangered Species Act. Manatees are herbivorous and feed on aquatic plants and are often seen in shallow, warm waters. They are particularly susceptible to harm from human activities such as boat strikes and habitat destruction, and conservation efforts are in place to protect them.
Miami is also home to a diverse array of bird life, with over 400 species of birds having been recorded in the area. Oleta Park and Biscayne Bay are particularly popular spots for bird watching, as they provide habitat for a wide variety of birds, including wading birds, shorebirds, and waterfowl. The area is also home to many migratory birds that pass through on their way to other parts of the country, making it a popular spot for birders. Some of the most notable bird species found in Miami include the Wood Stork, the Reddish Egret, and the Great Egret.
