Description

Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Tour – Paddle Into Alaska’s Wild Side

There’s seeing Mendenhall Glacier from a viewpoint… and then there’s paddling straight toward it.

This small-group canoe adventure takes you across the icy waters of Mendenhall Lake for a front-row seat to one of Alaska’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Quiet water. Towering ice. The kind of scenery that makes you stop paddling for a second just to take it all in.

The experience starts in downtown Juneau, where your guides meet you at the cruise ship terminal before heading deep into the Tongass National Forest. The drive alone feels like the beginning of an expedition—dense rainforest, mountain views, and endless stretches of untouched wilderness in the largest National Forest in the United States.

At the remote West Glacier Trailhead, you’ll gear up in full waterproof equipment and get a quick paddling lesson before launching onto the lake. No experience needed. Just a sense of adventure.

Then comes the moment you’ve been waiting for.

As your canoe glides across the calm glacier-fed water, Mendenhall Glacier rises into view—13 miles of ancient ice carved into sharp blue crevasses and dramatic frozen cliffs. It’s massive. Raw. Completely unforgettable. You’ll paddle close enough to hear the distant crack of shifting ice and feel the cool air rolling off the glacier itself.

And the scenery doesn’t stop there.

Your guide will lead the group toward Nugget Falls, where water crashes straight from the mountains into the lake beside you. Bald eagles circle overhead. Mountain goats cling impossibly high on the cliffs. Arctic terns skim across the water while the forest stretches endlessly behind you.

The entire experience feels wild in the best possible way—yet relaxed and approachable at the same time.

With around two hours of paddling on protected water and no hiking involved, this tour is perfect for first-time paddlers, families, and travelers who want a true Alaskan wilderness experience without an intense physical challenge. The pace is comfortable, the groups stay small, and your certified Wilderness First Responder guides handle all the details so you can focus on soaking it all in.

This seasonal adventure runs from May through late September and consistently earns 5-star reviews for a reason.

Because few experiences in Juneau feel this close to Alaska itself.

ADVENTURE PROVIDED BY Liquid Alaska Tours

FAQs

When does the tour season run?

Tours operate seasonally from May through late September. There are no adventure tours available from October through April.

Can I book if I'm traveling solo?

Absolutely — solo travelers are warmly welcomed on all tours.

What if my cruise ship is delayed or Juneau is cancelled as a port of call?

Cruise ships in Alaska generally run on schedule, but delays happen. If your ship is late, your guides will do their best to accommodate you. If they are unable to, you'll receive a full refund. If Juneau is cancelled entirely as a port of call, you'll also receive a full refund — this is completely beyond anyone's control.

Are we guaranteed to be back to the ship on time?

Yes. All tour times are scheduled around cruise ship arrival and departure times with adequate buffer built in before and after the adventure.

Will the tour be cancelled if it's raining?

No — rain is very common in Juneau, which sits in the heart of the world's largest temperate rainforest. Your guides embrace it, and you'll be outfitted head to toe in waterproof gear. Tours are only cancelled if conditions are deemed unsafe, in which case you'll receive a full refund.

Are there exceptions to the tour requirements?

No exceptions can be made. All requirements are based on strict safety protocols that apply to every guest without exception.

What gear sizes are available?

Rain jackets and pants are available in XS–XXL in both men's and women's cuts (The North Face and Marmot brands). Xtratuf rain boots are available in sizes 3–14 unisex. Limited child sizes are also available in both rain gear and boots.

What wildlife might I see on tour?

Bald eagles, porcupines, mountain goats, herons, shorebirds, arctic terns, and waterfowl are all commonly spotted in the area. However, these are not designated wildlife tours and no specific sightings can be guaranteed.

Are guides certified?

Yes — all guides are certified Wilderness First Responders (WFR). Some are also EMTs.

Do I have to paddle?

Yes — paddling is a team effort and everyone must participate. The more you paddle, the more of the lake you'll get to explore! Guests must have full mobility of their limbs and be able to paddle for up to 2 hours.

How large is the canoe?

This tour uses canoes that hold up to 10 guests maximum, with a 1:10 guide-to-guest ratio.

How close will I get to the glacier?

From the canoe, you'll get to within a few hundred meters of the glacier face — as close as possible while remaining on the water. Your guide will also paddle toward Nugget Falls for an up-close view. This tour does not land on shore or trek on the glacier — if you'd like to explore the moraine on foot, check out the Mendenhall Glacier Ice Adventure Tour.

Can I go into an ice cave?

This tour does not include a shore landing, so ice cave access is not part of this experience.

What should I wear?

The weather in Juneau is unpredictable, and the area near the glacier runs about 10°F (6°C) cooler than town. Dress in non-cotton layers — wool and synthetics are best. Bring a warm hat, gloves, and sunglasses if it's sunny. Your guides provide waterproof jackets, pants, and boots.

I've never paddled before — can I still join?

Absolutely. This is an ideal tour for first-time paddlers. The lake is calm and protected, making it a very manageable paddling environment. Your guides provide full instruction before you set off, and they'll be right there with you the entire time.

Can I bring a camera?

Yes — cameras and small personal bags are welcome on tour. Waterproof housing is strongly recommended as you'll be on the water, possibly in the rain. A dry bag is provided for your belongings during paddling. The outfitter is not responsible for any damaged or lost items.

Is food included, and can I bring my own?

Bottled water and healthy snacks are provided during the tour, and a hot beverage is served at the conclusion. You're welcome to bring your own food and drinks — just note there are no trash cans available, so you must pack out everything you bring.

Are there bathrooms available?

Flush toilets are located at the Goldbelt Tramway (your meeting and drop-off location). US Forest Service pit toilets are available at the West Glacier Trailhead before and after the tour. There are no restroom facilities while out on the water.

What are the physical requirements for this tour?

Guests must weigh between 90 lbs (41 kg) and 240 lbs (109 kg), be at least 12 years old, and have full use of all limbs for paddling. Guests with back, shoulder, or hip problems and pregnant guests are not permitted on this tour. This tour involves no hiking — only paddling — making it more accessible than the glacier trek option.

Is this a good tour for families?

Yes — this is specifically described as a family-friendly option and a favorite for families and nature lovers. The minimum age is 12, and the calm lake paddling is well-suited for younger teens and adults of all fitness levels.

Will I need to book in advance?

This tour is extremely popular and frequently sells out — advance booking is strongly recommended, especially for cruise passengers. A waitlist option is available through the outfitter's website.
