Description

Paddle Out Together, Stand Up Together & Celebrate Every Ride!

Surfing is better when your whole crew is cheering each other on. This private lesson is reserved for your family or friends only — no strangers in the lineup, just your people and an instructor who knows everyone's name by the first wave.

From the resort in Wailea, a complimentary shuttle carries the group down the coast to The Cove at Kalama Beach Park in Kihei, where gentle, rolling waves break into waist-deep water. You'll start together on the sand with paddling, stance, ocean safety, and pop-up practice, then head out for hands-on coaching. With a small guest-to-instructor ratio, everyone gets plenty of tries, plenty of feedback, and plenty of high-fives.

It's an easy morning to remember: siblings racing to stand up first, parents catching their first ride beside their kids, and — in winter — humpback whales breaching offshore. Photo packages are available so nobody has to miss the moment.

FAQs

What is an Ohana surf lesson?

"Ohana" means family in Hawaiian. This is a private lesson for your family or group of friends only — you won't be paired with other guests. It's an excellent option for couples, siblings, or friends traveling together who want more personal attention than a group class.

How many people can join an Ohana lesson?

One instructor coaches up to 4 guests, and a second instructor joins for a group of 5. Children ages 10 and under are paired with their own instructor.

Can young kids join the Ohana lesson?

Yes — children ages 10 and under can join their parents in an Ohana lesson, but they must have their own surf instructor for safety reasons, which carries an additional charge. Our instructors are experienced in teaching children with a strong focus on safety, patience, and fun.

Do I need prior experience to take a surf lesson?

Not at all. Our lessons are designed for first-timers and beginners — you'll learn everything from paddling technique and ocean safety to popping up on the board, with your instructor alongside you the whole way.

Where does the surf lesson take place?

While our ocean adventures launch from Polo Beach in Wailea, our surf lessons take place about 10 minutes away at The Cove at Kalama Beach Park in Kihei — one of the best beginner surf spots on Maui. It offers consistently gentle waves and safe, shallow conditions, which gives you the best possible chance of standing up and having fun. Our complimentary shuttle takes you there and back from the resort.

Can non-swimmers join an Ohana lesson?

Guests sharing an instructor need to be comfortable swimming in the ocean without assistance. Non-swimmers should book a private one-on-one lesson, where life jackets are available for added comfort.

What kind of surfboards do you use?

We use high-quality soft-top surfboards that are stable and beginner-friendly — ideal for learning to pop up and catch waves safely. A stand-up paddleboard can be provided instead if it suits you better.

Will there be photos of my lesson?

There is the option to add on a photo package! Photo packages are available for purchase. Ask your instructor or let us know at check-in if you'd like your surf moments captured.

Where do we meet?

All of our experiences check in at the Ocean Experience Center at the Fairmont Kea Lani resort, 4100 Wailea Alanui Dr, Wailea, HI 96753. Our paddle, kayak, and scuba activities launch directly from Polo Beach, just steps from check-in. Surf lessons include a shuttle from the resort to the surf break in Kihei, so please always check in with us at the resort rather than meeting at the beach.

Where should I park?

You can valet your vehicle at the Fairmont Kea Lani for a fee (we do not validate parking), or park for free at the public Polo Beach Park lot and walk to your right along the beachfront path to reach us.

Do I need to be staying at the Fairmont Kea Lani to book?

No — our experiences are open to everyone. Fairmont Kea Lani guests do have a shorter cancellation window, which is noted in the Cancellation Policy on each listing.

What time should I arrive?

Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled start time to check in, sign waivers, and get fitted for gear. Activities begin promptly so you get your full time on the water.

Are your guides and instructors certified?

Our team includes PADI-certified dive professionals and experienced local watermen, and our guides and instructors are trained in CPR and first aid. We keep high training standards, run safety checks, and maintain careful instructor-to-guest ratios.

What if I'm prone to motion sickness?

Time on the ocean can trigger motion sickness for some people. If you're prone to it, consider taking your preferred motion sickness medication about 30 minutes before your activity.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems. Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled 'non-nano.'
