Description
Paddle into the Pacific & Watch for Maui’s Humpback Whales!
Start your morning paddling into the calm waters off Wailea during one of Maui’s most extraordinary times of year. From December 20 through March 31, North Pacific humpback whales gather in Hawaiian waters, creating the opportunity to watch these enormous animals from the intimate, water-level perspective of a tandem kayak.
Launching from Mokapu Beach, you'll paddle along South Maui’s beautiful coastline as the morning light spreads across the Pacific. Your experienced ocean kayaking guide leads the way, helping you settle into a comfortable paddling rhythm while scanning the surrounding water for signs of whale activity. Keep your eyes on the horizon for the misty burst of a whale spout, the flash of a tail fluke, pectoral fins slapping the surface, or—if you're fortunate—the unforgettable sight of a humpback launching into a breach.
Between wildlife sightings, your guide shares fascinating insights into humpback whale migration, behavior, and their seasonal return to Maui, giving you a deeper understanding of the animals you're watching. Because these are wild whales moving naturally through the ocean, every morning is different and sightings and behaviors can never be guaranteed.
With the quiet rhythm of your paddle, Maui’s coastline behind you, and the possibility of humpbacks surfacing across the surrounding ocean, this seasonal adventure offers an incredible way to experience whale season in South Maui—active, personal, and right at water level.

FAQs
When is whale season in Maui?
Whale season runs from December 20th through March 31st. This tour is offered during that window, when humpback whales are present in South Maui waters.
Are we guaranteed to see whales?
Sightings can't be 100% guaranteed since these are wild animals, but the early morning departure and your guide's local knowledge are aimed at maximizing chances of whale activity.
Do I need kayaking experience?
No experience is necessary. Your guide provides paddling instruction before departure and leads the group throughout the tour.
How close will we get to the humpback whales?
Humpback whales are protected wildlife, and the tour follows all required whale-viewing regulations. Your guide will maintain the appropriate distance and will never intentionally chase, approach, or interfere with a whale. Sometimes whales choose to surface closer to a kayak on their own, but guests should never expect or attempt a close interaction. The experience is about observing wild humpbacks behaving naturally in their environment.
What kinds of whale behavior might we see from the kayak?
Every outing is different, but you may see humpbacks breaching, tail slapping, pectoral-fin slapping, spyhopping, blowing at the surface, or displaying their tail flukes before a dive. Maui is also an important winter habitat for mothers and calves, so you may see pairs traveling or resting together. Specific sightings and behaviors are never guaranteed.
Why go whale watching by kayak?
A kayak puts you incredibly close to the surface of the ocean, creating a quiet and immersive way to experience Maui's whale season. Instead of watching from high above the water, you'll scan the horizon from water level while paddling along the South Maui coastline. It's also an active adventure, combining kayaking, wildlife watching, and beautiful coastal scenery in one experience.
