Description

Discover Maui's Underwater World After Dark!

The reef changes completely after sunset, revealing an underwater world that most divers never get to experience. As daylight fades, many of Maui's daytime reef fish settle into the coral while nocturnal marine life begins to emerge. This guided shore night dive offers the opportunity to witness the ocean's nighttime transformation as you explore the reef by the light of your dive torch.

Guided by an experienced PADI Professional, you'll search for moray eels, white tip reef sharks, spiny lobster, octopus, sleeping sea turtles, crabs, shrimp, and countless other creatures that become active after dark. On especially calm nights, you may even notice tiny flashes of bioluminescence drifting through the water, adding another layer of magic to the experience. Every dive is different, making each night underwater a unique adventure.

Night dives are conducted as private experiences or in very small groups of no more than four divers, allowing your guide to provide personalized attention while helping you discover marine life that's easy to overlook. Before entering the water, your instructor conducts a detailed briefing covering dive procedures, communication, navigation, and the specific dive site, ensuring everyone feels comfortable before the descent. Previous night diving experience is not required—Open Water certification is sufficient—but a daytime dive beforehand is recommended if this will be your first experience diving after dark. With dives often lasting up to approximately one hour, air consumption permitting, it's an unforgettable way to experience an entirely different side of Maui's underwater world.

ADVENTURE PROVIDED BY Dive Maui

FAQs

How important is it to book in advance?

Booking in advance is the best way to avoid the disappointment of a sold-out day, especially during peak season. The sooner you reserve your spot, the better your chances of getting the date and time you want.

Do I need to complete a medical form before diving?

Yes. All divers complete a PADI/DAN medical questionnaire at check-in, though it's best to fill it out ahead of time. Answering "yes" to certain questions requires a physician's clearance before you can dive, and cancellations due to a "yes" answer aren't refunded within 48 hours of the dive.

Is diving equipment provided?

Yes, a full set of scuba gear is included in the price of your dive. If you have your own gear, you're welcome to bring it, though rentals are available for anyone who needs them.

What will I see on a night dive that I wouldn't see during the day?

Many fish that are active during the day settle down at night, while others — like eels, sharks, and lobster — come out to hunt. Depending on conditions, you may also spot bioluminescence in the water.

Do I need night diving experience to do this dive?

No. As long as you're Open Water Certified, no prior night dive experience is required, though your guides recommend doing a day dive first if this is your first time diving after dark.

Can I fly after diving?

Flying directly after scuba diving is incredibly dangerous and could result in a life-threatening illness called the Bends/Decompression Sickness. The Divers Alert Network (DAN) guidelines for flying after diving include:

  • A single no-decompression dive, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000 ft (305 m) interval of 18 hours suggested.
  • Multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000ft (305m) interval of 24 hours is suggested.
  • Dives requiring decompression stops are recommended to have longer than 18 hours.

Please discuss with your dive guide ahead of time what is suggested!

Can I go hiking or visit Haleakala after diving?

Any activity that brings you above 1000 ft (305 m) can trigger the Bends/Decompression Sickness. Please check your hike elevation to ensure that at no time you will be going up in elevation. If the hike does go to elevation, you must treat it like a preflight interval as listed above in the flying FAQ.

Do you use DIN or yoke regulators? Do you have DIN adapters available?

The dive boats use yoke (A-clamp) scuba tanks. If you dive with DIN regulators, DIN-to-yoke adapters are available to rent for your convenience.

The rental fee for the adapter is refunded when it is returned in good working condition after your dive, making it a simple option for traveling divers using DIN equipment.

If you're unsure whether you need a DIN adapter, you probably don't—most recreational rental regulators are already designed to fit the standard yoke tanks used on Maui dive boats.

Cancellation Policy

All reservations are subject to a 48 hour cancellation policy. Dive Maui reserves the right to cancel a dive if conditions are not safe. Dives cancelled by Dive Maui staff based on weather will receive full refund.
