One of the most historically rich wetlands in Louisiana, the Manchac Swamp was once home to the lost logging town of Ruddock and served as a navigational passage for early New Orleans explorers including Iberville, Bienville, and Pontchartrain. Today it remains one of the most scenic and wildlife-rich cypress swamps in the South.
Your local guide leads you through a mosaic of finger lakes, open marshes, and secluded backwater channels draped in Spanish moss and towering cypress trees. Along the way, you’ll cover 3–4 miles of slow-moving bayou, stopping to learn about the swamp’s ecology, cultural history, and resident wildlife. Roundtrip shuttle service from New Orleans is available for $25 per person. Pickup and drop-off is located in front of Mary’s Ace Hardware at 732 N. Rampart St., New Orleans, LA. Shuttle pickup is always one hour before your scheduled tour start time.
Free parking is available at the launch site for those driving themselves.

What to Bring / Wear
Clothing:
- Dress in layers suitable for the weather. Breathable, synthetic fabrics with UV protection are ideal.
- In summer, t-shirts and shorts are fine — bring sunscreen and bug repellent.
- In winter, pack pants, long sleeves, and a light jacket or vest you can adjust as you warm up paddling.
- Bringing a change of clothes is a good idea in case you get sweaty or splash water on yourself.
Footwear:
- Water shoes are ideal. Sandals, flip flops, and regular tennis shoes all work — you do not need to step in the water to board your kayak. Rubber boots (“Cajun Reeboks”) are a great option if you want full foot protection. Dress shoes are not recommended.

What wildlife might we see?
The Manchac Swamp is home to alligators, turtles, snakes, raccoons, deer, and nutria, as well as a wide variety of birds including egrets, herons, osprey, bald eagles, vultures, and warblers. Lucky paddlers may spot a roseate spoonbill or limpkin.
Are alligators dangerous?
Alligators have a natural fear of humans and are typically spotted on logs or swimming at a safe distance. We do not feed wildlife. Sightings range from small juveniles up to 8–10 feet in length.
What is the maximum group size?
The maximum group size for this tour is 14 people. For larger groups or specialized packages, private tour options are available — inquire at the time of booking.

What is the best time of year to visit?
The swamp is beautiful year-round. Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) offer the best wildlife viewing and comfortable temperatures. Summer tours are lush and green — book early morning or late evening slots to avoid midday heat and afternoon rain showers. Winter tours have a striking, atmospheric look with bare cypress trees and are still active with wildlife on warmer days.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Tours operate in light rain. If conditions become unsafe — including lightning, hazardous water conditions, or other serious weather events — your tour will be cancelled and you will receive a full refund.
What is the cancellation policy?
A full refund is offered for cancellations made more than 48 hours before the tour start time. Cancellations made between 24 and 48 hours in advance receive a 50% refund. No refund is issued for cancellations under 24 hours or no-shows.
Should I tip my guide?
Tips are not included and are greatly appreciated. Guides work hard to make your experience memorable, and gratuity is an important part of supporting them.

Can I drink alcoholic beverages on the tour?
- For insurance purposes we are not allowed to start a tour with someone who appears to be intoxicated.
What time will I be picked up?
9:00AM is the pickup time for our 10:15AM tour.

Cancellation Policy
Invoice must be paid in full for tour date to be reserved. Wild Louisiana Tours LLC offers a 100% refund for tour cancellation due to inclement weather e.g. weather considered hazardous to tour members safety. This includes: lighting storms, unsafe water conditions, wild fires, etc. Tours still operate in rain as long as the safety of clients is not jeopardized.
100% refund for cancellations over 48hours in advance.
50% refund for cancellations under 48 and over 24 hours in advance.
No refund is issued for no calls/no shows/cancellations under 24hrs of tour start.
