Description

Manchac Magic Tour — New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tour

Paddle through the hauntingly beautiful Manchac Swamp on this guided kayak tour just 30 minutes from downtown New Orleans. One of the most historically rich wetlands in Louisiana, the Manchac Swamp was once home to the lost logging town of Ruddock and served as a navigational passage for early New Orleans explorers including Iberville, Bienville, and Pontchartrain. Today it remains one of the most scenic and wildlife-rich cypress swamps in the South.

Your local guide leads you through a mosaic of finger lakes, open marshes, and secluded backwater channels draped in Spanish moss and towering cypress trees. Along the way, you’ll cover 3–4 miles of slow-moving bayou, stopping to learn about the swamp’s ecology, cultural history, and resident wildlife. Whether you’re a first-time paddler or a seasoned kayaker, the easy-to-moderate current and expert guidance make this one of the most accessible and rewarding swamp tours available near New Orleans.

The tour is offered multiple times daily and welcomes all ages and experience levels. Single and double kayaks are available, making it a great outing for solo travelers, couples, and families alike.

Duration

2–3 hours on the water. Plan for a few additional minutes at the start for introductions and gear orientation.

Start Times

Tours depart at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 2:30 PM, and 4:00 PM. Start times vary seasonally — check the booking calendar for current availability.

Ages

All ages are welcome. This tour is beginner- and family-friendly, with easy-to-moderate paddling on slow-moving, low-current water suitable for children and first-time paddlers.

Difficulty

Easy to Moderate. The bayou has very little current and frequent turns that help on windy days, making it accessible to beginners. No prior paddling experience is required.

What’s Included

  • Guided kayak tour led by a Louisiana local
  • Single or double kayak
  • Paddle and personal flotation device (PFD)

Not Included

  • Shuttle service (available for $25/person roundtrip)
  • Gratuity for guides (appreciated but not required)

What to Bring / Wear

Clothing:

  • Dress in layers suitable for the weather. Breathable, synthetic fabrics with UV protection are ideal.
  • In summer, t-shirts and shorts are fine — bring sunscreen and bug repellent.
  • In winter, pack pants, long sleeves, and a light jacket or vest you can adjust as you warm up paddling.
  • Bringing a change of clothes is a good idea in case you get sweaty or splash water on yourself.

Footwear:

  • Water shoes are ideal. Sandals, flip flops, and regular tennis shoes all work — you do not need to step in the water to board your kayak. Rubber boots (“Cajun Reeboks”) are a great option if you want full foot protection. Dress shoes are not recommended.

Bring:

  • At least one bottle of water (a half-gallon is recommended in summer months)
  • Hat and sunglasses (polarized lenses help spot wildlife in the water)
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug repellent (most useful in summer months)
  • Phone or camera (life vests have pockets to keep your phone accessible while paddling)
  • Cash for tips
