Mala Wharf 1 Tank Shore Dive: Sharks, Sea Turtles & Underwater Pier
Pricing
Must be SCUBA certified
Description
Swim Among Sea Turtles, Sharks & Sunken Pier Pilings!
After a short surface swim from shore, you'll descend onto the remains of the old wharf, where coral-covered pilings, swim-throughs, and open sandy areas create a unique underwater playground to explore. This site is especially well known for its resident Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu) and white tip reef sharks, but that's only the beginning. Keep an eye out for large schools of tropical fish, moray eels, octopus, nudibranchs, frogfish, and many other fascinating reef inhabitants that make Mala Wharf their home.
Dive groups are intentionally kept small, with no more than four divers per guide, allowing for a more personal experience and plenty of opportunities to discover the hidden marine life that many divers swim right past. Guided by experienced PADI Professionals, you'll explore the site at a comfortable pace while learning about the reef and its inhabitants. Most dives last up to approximately one hour, air consumption permitting, giving you plenty of time to experience one of Maui's most celebrated underwater environments.

FAQs
What marine life can I expect to see on this dive?
Mala Wharf is known for its Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) and white tip reef sharks, along with large schools of fish, octopus, eels, nudibranchs, and the occasional frogfish tucked into the wreckage.
Can I fly after diving?
Flying directly after scuba diving is incredibly dangerous and could result in a life-threatening illness called the Bends/Decompression Sickness. The Divers Alert Network (DAN) guidelines for flying after diving include:
- A single no-decompression dive, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000 ft (305 m) interval of 18 hours suggested.
- Multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000ft (305m) interval of 24 hours is suggested.
- Dives requiring decompression stops are recommended to have longer than 18 hours.
Please discuss with your dive guide ahead of time what is suggested!
Can I go hiking or visit Haleakala after diving?
Any activity that brings you above 1000 ft (305 m) can trigger the Bends/Decompression Sickness. Please check your hike elevation to ensure that at no time you will be going up in elevation. If the hike does go to elevation, you must treat it like a preflight interval as listed above in the flying FAQ.
Do I need to complete a medical form before diving?
Yes. All divers complete a PADI/DAN medical questionnaire at check-in, though it's best to fill it out ahead of time. Answering "yes" to certain questions requires a physician's clearance before you can dive, and cancellations due to a "yes" answer aren't refunded within 48 hours of the dive.
Do you use DIN or yoke regulators? Do you have DIN adapters available?
The dive boats use yoke (A-clamp) scuba tanks. If you dive with DIN regulators, DIN-to-yoke adapters are available to rent for your convenience.
The rental fee for the adapter is refunded when it is returned in good working condition after your dive, making it a simple option for traveling divers using DIN equipment.
If you're unsure whether you need a DIN adapter, you probably don't—most recreational rental regulators are already designed to fit the standard yoke tanks used on Maui dive boats.
