Description
Ride the Trade Winds: Windsurfing Lessons at Kanahā Beach
All Lessons
- Windsurf Beginner Group — 2 hours: Best for first-time windsurfers who want an affordable, shared lesson. Beginners start on longboards and learn the basics of sail handling, balance, steering, and how to “read the wind.” This is a good introductory option for individuals, families, or guests who want to try windsurfing in a group setting.
- Windsurf Private — 2 hours: Best for guests who want one-on-one coaching or a lesson tailored closely to their comfort level and goals. This option gives the most personalized instruction and is a strong fit for nervous beginners, returning windsurfers, or anyone who wants focused help with technique.
- Windsurf Kids Camp — 3 days / 6 hours total: A youth-focused camp designed to make windsurfing fun, social, and approachable. Kids use small sails and large, floaty boards that are easier to manage, with instruction covering basic windsurfing skills, wind theory, safety talks, and time on the water in small groups.
- Windsurf 5-Day Course — 10 hours total: Best for guests who want more progression than a single lesson. With five 2-hour sessions, students get repeated practice building balance, sail control, steering, wind awareness, and confidence on the board. This option is ideal for anyone who wants to move beyond a one-time introduction and develop stronger windsurfing fundamentals.

FAQs
Do I need to be strong or fit to windsurf?
Not for beginner lessons. Longboards and lightweight beginner sails are specifically chosen to make learning accessible regardless of athletic background. As you progress to shorter boards and larger sails, strength and fitness become more relevant — but beginners are always surprised by how manageable the gear is.
What is the wind like at Kanaha Beach?
Kanaha Beach Park on Maui's north shore is world-renowned for its consistent trade winds. Mornings typically bring lighter, steadier winds ideal for beginners. As the day progresses into the afternoon, the winds strengthen — which is when intermediate and advanced lessons (waterstart, shortboard, wave sailing) are scheduled to take advantage of planing conditions. Kanaha genuinely has some of the best windsurfing wind in the world.
Will I actually be sailing on my first lesson?
Yes — most beginners are sailing across the water and back to the beach within their first lesson. The large, stable longboards and lightweight sails make this genuinely achievable for most people. That said, individual progression varies, and your instructor will always work at a pace that's right for you.
When should I take my next lesson after my first one?
The sooner the better — muscle memory develops quickly, and successive lessons in the same week build on each session most effectively. Multi-day packages (3-day and 5-day) are available and structured to accelerate your progression. If you're visiting for a week, consider booking a multi-day package to maximize your time on the water.
