Description

Beginner Group Surf Lessons in Kihei, Maui

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of catching your first wave in Hawaii—and Kihei’s sunny south shore is one of the best places to make it happen. These beginner-friendly group surf lessons take place at Kalama Park, where warm water, gentle rolling waves, and a relaxed beach atmosphere create the perfect environment for first-time surfers. Whether you’re traveling with friends, family, or showing up solo, this is a fun, social way to jump into Maui surf culture and experience the thrill of riding a wave for yourself.
Your lesson starts on the beach with an easy-to-follow introduction covering paddling, popping up, ocean safety, and how to read incoming waves. Then it’s time to hit the water. Your instructors stay close by the entire session, helping you line up the right waves, time your paddle, and get to your feet. The surf at Kalama Park is ideal for learning—soft, consistent waves in semi-shallow water that let beginners practice without feeling overwhelmed.
Group lessons are energetic, supportive, and a great way to share the stoke with other new surfers. With small instructor-to-student ratios and plenty of coaching in the water, you’ll get lots of opportunities to catch waves and build confidence throughout the session. By the end, most guests leave salty, smiling, and completely hooked on surfing.

FAQs

What is the maximum group size for a group lesson?

Group lessons accommodate up to 12 participants, with a maximum of 6 surfers per instructor, keeping the ratio personal enough for real coaching feedback throughout the session.

What wave conditions can I expect at Kalama Park?

Kalama Park offers gentle, rolling waves in semi-shallow water, making it one of Maui's most forgiving and beginner-friendly surf environments. Conditions are generally best in the morning before the trade winds pick up.

What will I learn during the beach instruction portion?

Before entering the water, your instructor covers the fundamentals: paddling mechanics, how to pop up from prone to standing, ocean awareness, wave selection, and surfing etiquette — so you're set up for success from the very first paddle out.

Will I actually stand up on the board?

Most participants get to their feet during the lesson — the gentle, consistent waves at Kalama Park and attentive instructor coaching give beginners an excellent chance of riding a wave upright. That said, every surfer progresses at their own pace, and your guide will work with you the entire time regardless.

Do I need prior surfing experience?

Not at all. Lessons are designed for complete beginners through to surfers looking to sharpen their skills. Your instructor will tailor coaching to your ability from the moment you hit the sand.

What if I’m not a strong swimmer?

No problem! Our lessons take place in semi-shallow waters where most people can comfortably stand. While basic swimming ability is helpful, our instructors are there to assist you throughout the lesson, and we ensure a safe and supportive environment for all skill levels.

What if I’m nervous about surfing for the first time?

It's completely normal to feel a bit nervous before your first surf lesson! Our instructors specialize in working with beginners and will guide you every step of the way, from basic safety tips to getting comfortable in the water. We take things at your pace, so you can relax and enjoy the experience. Surfing is all about fun, and we’re here to make sure you feel confident and supported!

Cancellation Policy

There is a $25 cancellation fee.  No refund given for cancellations made under 24 hours (or for no shows). If Surf Yoga Maui must cancel a booking due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, we will reschedule your lesson.  In the event that no reschedule is possible, customers will receive a 100% refund.
