Animas River 2-Day Beginner Bikerafting Course - Durango, CO

Learn to pair bicycles and packrafts, and expand your capacity to explore your local waterways! Over two days, you’ll learn basic paddle and river reading techniques on the Animas River, along with basic bikerafting techniques on up to Class II rapids.

You'll spend the first day of this course focusing on learning packrafting skills, and the second learning how to transition from bikes to boats and vice versa on a mini bikeraft adventure in Durango.

This no-frills learn basic river bikerafting skills course is for the budget-minded aspiring bike-packrafter and will be done entirely in Durango, Colorado. This course is for beginners, though you must know how to ride a bicycle.

McPhee Reservoir 3-Day Bikerafting Foundations Course

Perfect for beginners or those looking for a relaxed introduction to bikerafting, this three-day course combines packrafting and bikepacking skills with plenty of time for swimming, exploring coves, and enjoying the stunning scenery of McPhee Reservoir and the San Juan National Forest. You’ll learn how to lash your bike to your packraft, carry your boat on your bike, and ride single- and double-track trails over 40 miles of cycling and seven miles of paddling. This course can also be tailored with shorter mileage for less-experienced riders. No boating skills required—just bring your bike and sense of adventure!

Animas & Colorado River 5-Day River Course + Backcountry Excursion

On this beginner/intermediate river bikerafting course, you’ll spend one full day learning packrafting skills on the Animas River. Day 2, you’ll do a micro-bikerafting adventure also on the Animas (on a different section), riding local trails. You’ll then practice your skills in the backcountry on a three-day, two-night excursion in the Utah desert on the Colorado River and Lake Powell.

This course will likely push you over the edge of things you’ve experienced. But we feel certain you’ll walk away from this course with a deeper sense of enjoyment for both living in and utilizing human-powered tools to pass through remote landscapes. We want your experience to be the milestone in your life that you measure everything else up to.

Women's Bikerafting Foundations: 4-Day Bike & Packraft Skills Course

This 4-day women’s bikerafting course blends packrafting and bikepacking skills into one empowering, multi-day river adventure. Designed specifically for female adventurers, this course offers a supportive learning environment to build confidence on both bikes and boats.

You’ll start with a dedicated training day on the Animas River, learning how to transition between bike and packraft. The following three days take you into the backcountry on the San Miguel and/or Dolores Rivers, depending on river levels. Expect to paddle and pedal 40–60 miles while developing the skills needed for your own future bikerafting expeditions. Beginners welcome—basic bike skills required.

Advanced & Custom Courses

For experienced packrafters and backcountry adventurers ready to take their skills further, we offer advanced and custom courses focused on technical paddling, complex river reading, group management, and expedition-style travel. Whether you want to tackle challenging whitewater, refine your skills on multi-day backcountry trips, or design a private course tailored to your goals, these programs provide hands-on instruction and expert guidance to help you confidently push your limits.

Length varies by course. Each day is a full day, from about 10:00 am to 4/4:30 PM.

Location / Where to Meet

Courses generally take place in Southwest Colorado or Southeastern Utah. Exact meeting locations will be provided with your course materials. We expect most people to either fly and rent a car or drive to the put-in/start point to meet us on the first day of the trip.

Ages & Requirements

No packrafting experience required. But basic backcountry skills are necessary. Can you cook your own food and set up your own tent? If so, these courses are for you.

Not Included

Depending on the course, participants are generally responsible for their own personal gear, lodging, meals, and transportation. Here’s a list of items that are typically not included:

  • A working bicycle and bike gear (helmet, tools)
  • Meals on the first training day or if you choose to dine out.
  • Drysuit
  • Whitewater-specific boat
  • Lodging
  • Adult beverages
  • Shuttling

Though we do not provide transportation, we will work together on the shuttle logistics.

What to Bring / Wear

What can I expect to learn on this course?

We base our learn basic river bikerafting and packrafting skills instructional courses on confidence and skill progression. We start slow and push you a little harder as we go, tailoring the experience to your own personal abilities.

For Beginner to Intermediate courses, you’ll learn a wide variety of skills, from the basics to more advanced river reading techniques. This is a list of some of the things you will learn:

  • Basic packraft equipment use and care
  • Self-rescue, partner-rescue and how to right your boat with a bike on it
  • Dealing with currents
  • Aggressive & defensive swimming positions
  • How to navigate river hazards with a bike on your boat
  • River dynamics
  • Basic paddle strokes with a bike on your boat
  • Using eddies
  • River commands
  • How to lash your bike to your boat and vice versa
  • Transitioning from bikes to boats and vice versa

Packing List

River & Bikerafting Gear

  • Drysuit (required for first 1–2 days of the 5-day course; optional but recommended for 2-day—wetsuit acceptable)
  • Moisture-wicking base layers (no cotton)
  • Fleece or wool mid-layer (for under drysuit)
  • Neoprene socks and river shoes or booties
  • Sun hat or brimmed cap (fits under helmet)
  • Sunglasses with retention strap
  • Sunscreen and SPF lip balm
  • Small drybag or waterproof pack
  • Water bottle or hydration system (at least 2L capacity)
  • Bike helmet
  • Bike tools & repair kit (multi-tool, spare tube, pump, patch kit)
  • Working mountain or gravel bike suited for off-pavement travel

Camping & Personal Essentials

  • Backpack or bikepacking bags (we have limited loaner bags available)
  • Tent or shelter system
  • Sleeping bag (20–30°F recommended)
  • Sleeping pad
  • Lightweight stove and cook kit (pot, stove, fuel, lighter)
  • Eating utensils and mug
  • Headlamp + spare batteries
  • Warm evening layers (insulated jacket, beanie, gloves)
  • Lightweight camp shoes or sandals
  • Personal hygiene kit (toothbrush, biodegradable soap, quick-dry towel)
  • Trash bag for packing out waste
  • Personal medications and basic first aid supplies

Bike-Specific

  • Bikepacking frame bags, seat bags, or handlebar roll (loaner gear available in limited quantities)
  • Bike lock (optional but recommended for in-town sections)
  • Chain lube
  • Spare derailleur hanger (if applicable)

Will I need a drysuit and where can I rent one?

You will need a drysuit for most courses. Rent drysuits locally at 4CornersRiversports.com (they only have four), or get a 15% discount if you order them online at BackcountryPackraft.com (we will give you the discount code once you pay your deposit).

What kind of packrafts do you provide?

We also do not provide whitewater boats. However, we have four total whitewater boats to rent for a small fee of $30 per day: one small Wolverine, one medium Wolverine, one medium Gnarwhal and one large Gnarwhal. Please visit the Alpacka Raft sizing guide to determine which boat is right for you.

Cancellation Policy

  1. If you cancel prior to 7 days before your course, you’ll get a 50% refund. If you cancel within 7 days of your course, you’ll get no refund.**
  2. If you decide to accept any refund, you may not reschedule your course.
  3. If you choose to not take any refund, you may reschedule your course at anytime.
  4. The first time you reschedule your course, you must pay a per-person, per-day rescheduling fee of $50 (so $200 if you’ve cancelled a 4-day course), plus any difference in course costs for the new course. The second time you reschedule, the rescheduling fee is $75 per person, per day. If you need to reschedule a third time, please call us to discuss. Under some circumstances we may waive the fee. The rescheduling fee is due 30 days before your rescheduled course.***

Discounted Courses:

  1. If you purchased your course at a discount, you will not be eligible for any refund, at any time, for funds requested.
  2. You will be able to reschedule your course at anytime with no expiration date.
  3. You will be able to reschedule once.
  4. If the course you reschedule to is more expensive, you will be required to pay the difference.

The reason we charge a rescheduling fee is because we run trips with a 4:1 guest to guide ratio. If we have five people on course, we need two guides. If you cancel, and there are only four people o the course, we will have to pay the second guide on that course. Your reschedule feel helps offset that cost.
