Description

Catch Your First Wave in Lahaina: Maui Group Surf Lessons

Learning to surf in Maui is a bucket-list experience, and the waters off Lahaina are one of the best places in Hawaii to take your first steps on a board. Rooted in the island's deep cultural connection to the ocean, surfing here is more than a sport — it's a tradition passed down for centuries. Your guides will share the history and aloha spirit behind wave-riding as they get you up and catching waves within a two-hour session.

The group surf lesson is ideal for beginners and those looking to build on foundational skills alongside other students. Your instruction starts on the beach with safety rules, paddling technique, and how to pop up on the board before you ever hit the water. Once in the ocean, your guide stays close, reading the waves and coaching you in real time. Groups larger than five will have a second instructor added to keep the experience personal and the ratio manageable. The goal every session: you stand up and ride a wave on your own!

Duration

  1. 2 Hours

Location / Where to Meet

  1. Lessons take place along the Lahaina coastline at beginner-friendly locations selected based on daily conditions!
  2. We frequently teach at the popular Guardrails surf break near Launiupoko but exact meeting instructions are provided after booking!

Ages & Requirements

  1. Minimum age: 9 years old
  2. Our policies state that any student that is 8 or under or an adult who isn’t confident in their swimming skills must book a private lesson for their safety. A private lesson does not ‘separate’ your child from the rest of the family. This option gives your child their own instructor who will stay with them in the water the entire time while you surf as a group.
  3. Being a strong swimmer is not a must to take classes, but being able to tread water and feel confident in the ocean is important.
  4. Prior surfing experience is not required.
  5. A minimum of 4 people in your group are required to book this package with a maximum of 25 people per group.

What's Included

  1. 2-hour surf lesson with a certified instructor
  2. Surfboard for the duration of the lesson
  3. Instruction on land before entering the water (safety, paddling technique, pop-up mechanics)

Not Included

  1. Gratuity - Never expected but if you have a great experience, please consider gifting 10-25% to your instructors!

What to Bring / Wear

  1. Swimsuit & Towel
  2. Reusable Water Bottle Filled w/ Water & Snacks for After the Lesson
  3. Reef-Safe Sunscreen
  4. Extra Layers of Clothing - Sweatshirts and Warm Hats

FAQs

Do I need to know how to swim to take a lesson?

You don't need to be a strong swimmer, but you should be able to tread water and feel comfortable in the ocean. Anyone who isn't confident in the water — regardless of age — is required to book a private lesson for safety.

What sunscreen should I use?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that harm coral reefs. Please use a reef-safe, mineral-based, non-nano sunscreen. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard as an alternative or complement to sunscreen.

Do I need prior surfing experience for a group lesson?

No prior experience is needed. The group lesson is designed for first-timers and those still building their foundational skills. Your instructor will cover everything on land before you enter the water.

How large is the group?

Groups of 4 or more participate in the group lesson format. If your group has more than five people, a second instructor will be added. Groups of up to 25 can be accommodated!

What is the instructor-to-student ratio?

For group lessons, a second instructor is added when the group exceeds five students. The outfitter is committed to keeping ratios manageable so every student gets attention.

Will I actually be able to stand up on the board during my first lesson?

Many first-time surfers do manage to stand up during their very first session—especially with soft-top boards and step-by-step guidance. However, everyone learns differently and at their own pace. Some guests pop up right away, while others spend their first lesson getting comfortable with paddling, balance, and timing. The goal is progress, not perfection. Even if you don’t fully stand on your first wave, most people experience noticeable improvement throughout the lesson and enjoy the thrill of riding a wave in some form, whether kneeling, crouching, or standing.
