Lesson Levels
Beginner SUP Lessons
This basic class teaches footing, balance and paddling form. We will make you comfortable with the board and the water.
These lessons are perfect for people who have become accustomed to the board and are looking for a richer experience.
We will take you out to the waves and teach you how to manage your board on them. Advanced turns, timing, and speed will all be addressed in these fun and challenging lessons. Please note in your reservations that you would like an 'Advanced Lesson'.

Ages & Requirements
- Minimum age: 9 years old
- Our policies state that any student that is 8 or under or an adult who isn’t confident in their swimming skills must book a private lesson for their safety. A private lesson does not ‘separate’ your child from the rest of the family. This option gives your child their own instructor who will stay with them in the water the entire time while you surf as a group.
- The outfitter does not publish an official weight limit, but most recreational stand-up paddleboards comfortably support approximately 250–300 lbs (113–136 kg).
- No prior paddleboarding experience required!
- Being a strong swimmer is not a must to take classes, but being able to tread water and feel confident in the ocean is important.
- A minimum of 4 people in your group are required to book this package with a maximum of 25 people per group.

What sunscreen should I use?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that harm coral reefs. Please use a reef-safe, mineral-based, non-nano sunscreen. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard as an alternative or complement to sunscreen.
Is this SUP lesson suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. Stand-up paddleboarding is one of the most approachable water sports in Hawaii, and these lessons are specifically designed for first-time paddlers. You'll begin on calm water using a large, stable board while learning the fundamentals of balance, paddling, turning, and ocean awareness. Most guests are surprised by how quickly they become comfortable standing and paddling.
Will I be able to stand up on the paddleboard during my lesson?
Many first-time paddlers are able to stand up during their first lesson, thanks to the wide, stable boards used for instruction. However, everyone learns at their own pace. Some guests prefer to begin kneeling and gradually work toward standing as they become more comfortable. The goal is to build confidence and have fun, not rush the process.
What marine life might I see during the lesson?
Maui's coastal waters are full of life, and paddleboarding provides an excellent vantage point for spotting it. Depending on conditions, guests may see Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu), tropical reef fish, rays, and seabirds along the coastline. During whale season, generally December through April, humpback whales may occasionally be spotted in the distance. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but being elevated above the water often makes it easier to observe marine life than while swimming.
