Description

Explore Mala Wharf’s Underwater Reef & Sea Turtle Habitat

Mala Wharf is one of Maui’s most unique shore snorkeling spots, where the remains of an old pier have transformed into a thriving underwater reef. Beneath the surface, the collapsed pier structure, coral growth, lava rock, and sandy channels create a maze-like habitat filled with marine life. This small-group guided snorkel takes you directly from shore into clear, accessible water where Hawaiian green sea turtles are often seen resting, grazing, or gliding through the reef.
There’s no boat ride required, making this a great option for guests who want an easier, shore-based snorkeling experience without worrying about seasickness or crowded decks. Before entering the water, your CPR-certified local guide provides an ocean safety briefing and snorkeling gear tutorial so everyone feels prepared. Once in the water, the guide leads the group at a comfortable pace, pointing out turtles, reef fish, eels, octopus, and other marine life that call Mala Wharf home.
The old pier ruins are what make this site so special. The underwater structure attracts a high concentration of reef life, from nenue and goatfish to parrotfish, black surgeonfish, butterflyfish, and sometimes spotted eagle rays or other larger marine visitors. Float belts and life jackets are available for extra confidence, and groups are kept small so the experience feels personal and supportive. Whether you’re newer to snorkeling or already comfortable in the water, Mala Wharf offers one of Maui’s most memorable reef and turtle snorkel experiences.

Wildlife Guidelines

Turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins are all protected species in Hawaii. You are not allowed to chase, harass, feed, or TOUCH any of the marine species. Please enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path. Please also be respectful of the fact that coral is a living organism and any standing, touching, or knocking over will irreparably damage the organism that takes a very long time to grow and is essential to our marine reefs.

FAQs

Are your guides certified?

Yes — all guides are CPR-certified and experienced locals with deep knowledge of Maui's reefs, marine life, and Hawaiian culture. They are trained to support guests of all ability levels and comfort levels in the water.

What marine life can I see when snorkeling at Mala Wharf in Lahaina?

Mala Wharf's old pier structure has created a rich underwater habitat over the decades. Guests regularly see Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), moray eels, octopus, and a dense mix of reef fish. The pier pilings are covered in coral and encrusting life, and the surrounding sandy bottom attracts rays. This is a shore snorkel only, not a dive, so all marine life is seen from the surface.

When is the best time to snorkel at Mala Wharf?

Morning hours typically offer the calmest conditions and best water clarity at Mala Wharf. Conditions are generally good year-round in Lahaina, with summer (May–September) tending to be the flattest. Guides monitor conditions daily and will reschedule or relocate if conditions are not suitable.

Can I snorkel with a mustache or beard?

You can snorkel with a beard or mustache, but facial hair can prevent a tight seal between the mask and your face, which may cause water to leak in. It is often recommended to shave at least your mustache before going out. If you'd prefer not to shave, bring petroleum jelly or chapstick — coating your mustache can help create a better seal and prevent water from getting in.

Can I wear glasses or contacts while snorkeling?

You can't wear glasses with a snorkel mask, but contacts are totally fine and often the best option for seeing clearly underwater. If you have a prescription mask, feel free to bring it — rental shops typically don't carry them. Fun fact: everything appears about 25% larger and closer underwater, which helps visibility a bit even without correction.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals — including oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens — that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and bleaching. Please use reef-safe sunscreen. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled 'non-nano.'

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to join this tour?

No — float belts and life jackets are available for guests who want extra support in the water. Guides stay with the group throughout and adapt to everyone's comfort level. Families with children who are comfortable in the ocean are welcome.

Are there really no boats involved?

Correct — all tours depart directly from shore at Mala Wharf. There is no boat, no seasickness, and no harbor crowds. You'll walk into the water from the beach near the pier.

Will I see sea turtles?

Yes — the reefs at Mala Wharf are home to honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) year-round, and turtle sightings are very common on this tour. That said, these are wild animals, so encounters can never be 100% guaranteed on any given day.

How does the free photo and video package work?

Your guide captures professional underwater photos and video of your experience throughout the tour. The images and footage are sent to you within 24–48 hours of the tour via email or text link. This is included in the tour price at no extra charge.
