Description
LED Moonlight Clear Kayak Tour – Salt River Bay at Night!
Unlike a traditional bioluminescent bay tour that focuses primarily on glowing plankton, this experience is about exploring more of the preserve and discovering the bay’s nighttime ecosystem. Your guide leads you through multiple sections of the protected 1,000-acre (405 ha) bay system, including mangrove-lined waterways, open coves, and historical areas connected to the island’s rich cultural past. Along the way, you’ll hear stories about the indigenous history of Salt River Bay, Christopher Columbus’ landing in 1493, and the wildlife and ecosystems that make this national park so special.
The transparent kayaks and LED lighting create an entirely different perspective from a daytime paddle. Looking through the illuminated hull into the Caribbean water below feels almost surreal—especially when marine life appears beneath you in the darkness. With calm protected water, small group sizes, and experienced local guides, this tour combines wildlife, history, and pure atmosphere into one of the most memorable nighttime experiences on St. Croix.

FAQs
How is the LED Moonlight Tour different from the Bioluminescent Bay Tour?
The LED Moonlight Tour uses transparent kayaks fitted with LED lights to illuminate marine life beneath you throughout the entire tour — sea turtles, rays, jellyfish, and fish are the primary attraction. It also covers a broader area of the bay, including historical landmarks, and focuses heavily on natural history and local storytelling. The Bioluminescent Bay Tour, by contrast, focuses specifically on the bioluminescent bay itself, where the glowing dinoflagellates create the 'galaxy' effect. Both tours are extraordinary night experiences — guests with multiple nights on the island often choose to do both.
What wildlife might I see on the LED Moonlight Tour?
The LED-lit transparent kayaks attract and illuminate a remarkable range of nocturnal marine life. Previous guests have spotted green sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, Cassiopeia (upside-down) jellyfish, bioluminescent plankton, and various Caribbean fish species. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but Salt River Bay's protected waters and rich ecosystem make encounters highly likely.
Will I get wet?
Yes — expect to get splashed while paddling, especially on the open water portion before entering the bay. Wear clothing or swimwear you don't mind getting wet.
Is this tour appropriate for first-time kayakers?
Absolutely. No prior kayaking experience is needed. Your guide will provide a full safety briefing and paddling demo before departure. The protected waters of Salt River Bay are calm and suitable for beginners.
Does my weight really matter?
Yes — weight limits are extremely important for both safety and kayak performance. The fully transparent “sea thru” kayaks are specially designed to maximize visibility into the water below, but because of their construction, they also have stricter weight limits than traditional kayaks.
For the transparent kayaks:
- Maximum individual weight: 235 lbs (107 kg)
- Maximum combined weight per kayak: 385 lbs (175 kg)
These limits help ensure the kayaks remain stable, responsive, and safe on the water. Overloading a kayak increases the risk of taking on water, reduced maneuverability, instability, or capsizing.
Transparent kayaks are generally configured as two-person tandem kayaks, and guests are paired accordingly unless you are a solo traveler or part of an odd-numbered group. If your group exceeds the transparent kayak limits, alternative kayak options may be available depending on availability:
- Glass-bottom kayaks: up to 385 lbs (175 kg) combined
- Sit-on-top kayaks: up to 500 lbs (227 kg) combined
- Paddleboards: maximum 225 lbs (102 kg)
If guests arrive above the posted limits, participation in the transparent kayaks may not be possible, and guides may place guests into another type of kayak if available. These limits are strictly enforced for everyone’s safety.
For families with children:
- Each child must ride in a kayak with an adult
- Groups may not have more children than adults
- If your group has more children than adults, please contact the outfitter before booking to discuss possible arrangements
Guests who voluntarily leave the tour early or who are unable to safely participate in a way that affects group safety may not be eligible for a refund.
Why can't I wear bug spray?
Don’t worry! We’ve got you covered. DEET is nasty stuff, it is harmful to the bioluminescent organisms in the bay, and it melts our boats! We will provide a DEET free, Picaridin based insect repellent lotion for your convenience. You’ll love it.
Why is there an age limit?
Our main concern bringing small children on the tour is that they won’t be able to sit still for the entire tour, and will disrupt the enjoyment of others, since we can’t turn the tour around for only one party. We’ve set our age limit at 5 years old. However, if you believe that you have a little one that can handle the time on the water, and you can’t find a baby sitter – give us a call and we can talk about it. We do have large “sit-on-top” boats that can handle three or four passengers (if one or two of them are small). Just remember, this is an adventure tour with 1.5 miles of paddling. All children under the age of 13 must have a capable, fit adult in the kayak with paddling with them.
What happens if it rains?
Generally speaking, if it rains, we get wet! Quick passing showers are one of the delightful things about the Caribbean, especially during certain seasons. They are called diurnal showers and they frequently pass just after sunset. If we anticipate widespread, pervasive, nasty, long ongoing rain, then we will cancel the tour. We make this judgement call about 1.5 hours before the tour departs and send out emails and text messages to alert everyone. Last year, this happened about four or five times, so it is very rare. Typically the rain passes quickly, and the tour continues. Light rain does not affect the bioluminescence, and actually, adds a beautiful raindrop effect
Does it matter that I cannot swim?
No worries. All guests are required to wear a USCG approved personal flotation device. These are comfortable paddling vests, once you get comfortable with them you will forget you have one on, and will want to wear it home.
Cancellation Policy
For a full refund, all cancellations must be made 48 hours prior to the tour departure time.
If the you request to abandon the tour and return to the marina, or if a guide determines that you or a member of your party is unable to safely complete the tour, the guest will return to the marina and no refund will be given.
Any guest who is a "no-show", and any guest who does not arrive at the appropriate time will not be given refunds. Any cancellation or change within 2 hours of the tour time is considered a "no-show"
The tour will operate if there is light rain or passing showers expected. If the staff determines the weather or conditions unsafe, the tour will be postponed or cancelled. Full refunds are issued if a tour is cancelled and you are unable to reschedule.
