Iconic Kokopelli Trail - Guided Mountain Biking Adventure from Fruita to Moab
Experience the legendary Kokopelli Trail on this epic 5-day guided mountain biking and camping journey from Fruita, Colorado to Moab, Utah. This point-to-point route traverses over 140 miles of classic desert terrain, winding through sandstone canyons, open plateaus, alpine forests, and remote red rock wilderness. Each day blends technical jeep roads, flowing singletrack, and jaw-dropping scenery—including views of the Colorado River, ancient Precambrian rock, and the towering La Sal Mountains.
Built for strong, experienced riders, this is our most challenging desert trip. But the reward is unforgettable: remote backcountry riding, heart-pounding descents, and the satisfaction of rolling into Moab, the mountain biking capital of the world. With gourmet meals, professional support, and nightly campfires under the stars, this ride combines the grit of adventure with the comfort of expert guiding. Itinerary
DAY 1
We start our trip with a quick shuttle to the Mary’s Loop Trailhead in Loma. Our day starts with a gentle doubletrack climb to a high bench overlooking the Colorado River. From here the singletrack begins and connects us to both the Lions Loop and Troybuilt trails. The singletrack riding here is so good that the locals from Moab travel to Grand Junction to ride these very trails. A stout singletrack climb and some hike-a-biking takes us to our lunch spot where the support truck will be waiting. Our afternoon ride is a fun rolling double track through Rabbit Valley which takes us into a sandstone walled canyon. After our final climb for the day up to Harley’s Dome we will camp perched high above the Colorado River and enjoy a tasty Dutch Oven dinner. TOTAL MILEAGE: 32 miles
DAY 2
Shortly after we leave camp today, we will cross the state line into Utah while riding through a beautiful canyon. The riding this morning is on a rugged four-wheel drive road which climbs out of the canyon to the higher Pinyon pine and juniper covered plateau. We will descend to the banks of the Colorado River, and cruise past the Westwater boat ramp. Downstream, the river cuts through Precambrian rock which is approximately 1.8 billion years old. Not only is Westwater Canyon known to river runners for Class 3-4 rapids, it is one of the only times this ancient rock is exposed along the river until the bottom of the Grand Canyon gorge. After lunch we enjoy some open desert riding which delivers us to more fun jeep roads along the river and singletrack. Then we’ll cross the Colorado River and ride a final section of dirt road that takes us to our camp at the base of the Entrada Sandstone bluffs. TOTAL MILEAGE: 40 miles
DAY 3
This morning we start with a major climb, insuring a good strong appetite for lunch. This famous 2,400 foot climb will take us to the top of Sevenmile Mesa, rewarding us with great views of the Uncompahgre Plateau and the Dolores River canyon. There is a spur ride off our route called “Top of the World,” which is pretty much how it feels! Toward the top of the climb the road gets rough and the riding gets technical. Wildlife abounds in this remote country and we may see bighorn sheep or a bald eagle. We’ll eat the lunch we packed on the edge of the spectacular canyon and then descend down Rose Garden Hill into Fisher Valley and Onion Creek. Tonight we will camp near beautiful slickrock formations among the pinyons and junipers. TOTAL MILEAGE: 22 miles
DAY 4
Now we have reached the La Sal Mountains and to start we must climb up to North Beaver Mesa. The riding is loose at the beginning but improves as we gain altitude, as do the views, which are truly incredible. The La Sal Mountains were named by the early Spanish explorers who called them “mountains of salt.” These mountains seem to rise right out of the desert. They are laccolithic which means they were pushed up by volcanic forces but the crust was never broken, resulting in their rounded appearance. Just over the top, having gained several thousand feet, we will stop for lunch near some very distinct dinosaur tracks in the slickrock high above the valley floor. We will also enjoy a great view of Fisher Valley below. After lunch we descend on pavement into Castle Valley, then settle in to the climb up the other side. We’re straddling ecosystems here with alpine over the left shoulder and the desert’s red rock canyons over the right. The last section of today’s ride is back on dirt on one of our favorite segments of the Kokopelli. A two track swoops down off the shoulder of the mountains and this is where the aspens meet the slickrock. We’ll camp tonight with sunset views of Arches National Park. TOTAL MILEAGE: 32 miles
DAY 5
From camp this morning we will head down the Sand Flats Road, which is also the route of the Kokopelli Trail. Today’s ride is payback for all the climbs we have done along the way. The sun is at our back as we descend, lighting the finned rock and the red wall cliffs of the Moab Rim. Our views reach as far as Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. As we finish our epic ride we will have one more delicious lunch and then we will shuttle back to Grand Junction. TOTAL MILEAGE: 20 miles
Packing List
Be sure to bring everything on this list. We have carefully developed this list to ensure your comfort on the tour regardless of the weather. If you are prepared for extreme weather, it is an adventure. If you are not prepared it can be a serious problem. We recommend the layering system, including a wicking or long underwear layer, an insulating layer and a weather barrier for wind and rain. This list reflects that philosophy. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable so be sure to bring all the warm clothing and rain gear listed!
HOW TO PACK: The bulk of your gear and clothing will ride in the Western Spirit support vehicle (preferably in a large duffle bag) and will not be accessible during the day.
For this trip, you will need a riding pack and optional day bag:
- Your riding pack may be a hydration pack, but needs to carry 2-3 liters of water, rain gear, other warm clothing, and food for the day. You may be away from camp and the support vehicle all day and need to be self-sufficient.
- A small day bag is optional and may be used to store things you’d rather not ride with, but would like to have access to during the day. This day-pack will remain with the support vehicle and may not be accessible, depending on the day.

What's included in the trip price?
The trip price includes food and drinks for the trip, guides, support vehicle, campsites, permits, and any entry fees into national parks and public lands.
Not included are: rental fees (bikes and camping gear), alcoholic beverages, gratuities for your guides, and applicable sales tax. If you would like to bring alcoholic beverages we will store them for you at the appropriate temperature.
Your total tour cost will include your trip fee, appropriate rental fees and applicable sales tax
Are drinks included?
We provide water, coffee, teas, electrolyte drinks, and assorted soft drinks. We cannot provide alcohol. You are welcome to bring your favorite alcoholic beverages and our guides will store them at the appropriate temperature. We’ll keep the beer cold while you’re out riding!
Is food included?
Yes! From lunch on the first day to lunch on the last day, we’ve got healthy and delicious food to fuel your fun. Food is one thing we take pretty seriously and we get rave reviews from our guests.
Our guides are amazing backcountry chefs and will prepare all your meals. All snacks are included. We’re sponsored by Clif Bar, and provide you with plentiful bars, snacks and electrolyte drinks. If you have specific favorite riding snacks, however, please bring them with you.
Can you accommodate my dietary restrictions?
Yes, no problem! We are happy to accommodate dietary restrictions, and we do it frequently. Our guides are masters at making sure everyone is satisfied. Please let us know when you fill out your forms so our guides can accommodate you and your needs. It is good to be specific (e.g., vegetarian but prefer tempeh over tofu) to help the guides with meal planning.
What will the weather be like?
We wish we could tell you exactly, but Mother Nature is quite unpredictable as you may know. Our trips are designed with the best weather in mind, and follow the seasons—desert trips in spring and fall, and mountain trips in the summer. By sticking to our packing list that we’ve designed for you, you’ll be prepared for whatever comes our way (bringing rain gear almost assures it won’t rain, right?).
How many people are on a trip?
Most of our permits allow us to take 13 guests and 2 guides, although many trips are smaller than our maximum allowed. Our Maze permit in Canyonlands National Park is more limited with only 7 guests and 2 guides to maintain the remote wilderness experience.
What type of bikes do you rent? What do I need to know about renting bikes?
For mountain bikes, we use the Specialized Stumpjumper ST 29ers. For road bikes, we use the Specialized Diverge E5 Elite. All our rental bikes come with flat pedals, a helmet, and one water bottle cage. We provide the water bottle and all the bike repair gear.
If you’re renting a bike from us, you do not need to show up early. Please meet at the scheduled time and we will fit you to your rented bike then.
What pedals come on your rental bikes?
All Western Spirit rental bikes come with flat pedals. If you have clipless pedals (e.g., SPD, Crank Brothers, etc.), you’re welcome to bring them along with your shoes. We swap out pedals all the time!
How should I pack my things?
The packing list will tell you how to pack, since it depends on which trip you are on. Overall, we use a 3-bag system:
Camping gear and personal items for camp (gets packed away in the morning and is inaccessible throughout the day), Small daypack (stays in vehicle and is accessible throughout the day, e.g., extra layers, prescription medications, extra snacks, etc.), Hydration pack you wear (all things you readily need, right there on your back). We recommend a 2-liter hydration system (e.g., Camelbak) to carry the things needed during the day (water, snacks, lunch, rain gear, extra layer, sunscreen, camera, etc.), and to easily hydrate without stopping.
Do I need to bring bike repair gear?
Nope! We provide spare tubes (for 26”, 27.5” and 29” wheels), lube, tool kits, and pumps.
Can I bring my own bike and camping gear?
Certainly! If you bring camping gear, please bring a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. We’ll provide everything else you need. Don’t worry about the camp chairs—we bring those too!
Please make sure all your gear is in excellent, working condition before you head out on your trip. If you’re bringing your own bike, please make sure it has been tuned up and is in excellent riding condition before the trip.
Do you rent camping gear?
Yes! We rent tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads. Sleeping bags are thoroughly washed between trips. The following prices are for the whole trip:
2-person tent – $40 Sleeping bag – $35 Sleeping pad – $15 Total $90
Will I be able to take a shower?
We offer solar showers which are a nice way to rinse off and refresh yourself, but it is not enough water to take a full-fledge shower. The showers are not private, so please bring a swimsuit and your own towel. Showers are dependent on water resources, which may be restricted if it’s a hot desert trip. Some campsites have streams and lakes available for swimming. We also recommend wet-wipes to refresh after a fun day on the bike.
When I'm camping, where will I go to the bathroom?
It’s not a glamorous topic, and we know this can be a subject of concern and embarrassment for some. We make it as easy and sanitary as possible! If we’re camping in designated campsites, we use the pit toilets available in the campgrounds. If we’re camping in the backcountry, we obey by the pack-it-in-pack-it-out rule. We set up a portable toilet lovingly called “the groover,” and put it in a private location with a stunning view. We provide a hand wash system for clean up.
What if I'm traveling by myself?
Please join us! We get solo travelers all the time and going on a bike trip is a great way to meet like-minded people. Many of our guests end up as lifelong friends after a Western Spirit trip.
