FAQs
Is this lesson suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. These lessons are designed specifically for people who have never kiteboarded before. The instruction begins on land with the fundamentals—learning how the kite works, how to control power, how safety systems function, and how to move the kite through the wind window. Only after you’re comfortable with these basics do you progress toward body dragging and board skills in the water.
Kiteboarding has a very structured learning curve, and beginner lessons follow a clear step-by-step progression so you never feel rushed or overwhelmed. The instructor tailors the pace to your comfort level and experience with wind or board sports. You don’t need any prior surf, wakeboard, or kite experience to get started—just a willingness to learn and have fun.
How many lessons does it take to get on the water?
Getting into the water happens early in the learning process, but riding the board usually takes more time. Most students need multiple lessons to build strong kite control before they’re ready to attempt standing and riding. A single-day introductory session is great for trying the sport, learning how the equipment works, and practicing basic kite skills, but it typically isn’t enough to get up and ride independently.
Because kiteboarding is a two-part skill—kite handling + board control—most students find that a multi-day course (2–4 sessions) gives them the time needed to safely progress. Everyone learns at their own pace, and the instructor will guide you through each step as you’re ready.
Is kiteboarding physically demanding, and do I need to be in great shape?
Kiteboarding does require some physical effort, but it’s not as strength-based as many people expect. The kite provides most of the pull, and your harness transfers that power into your body so your arms don’t have to do all the work. Basic fitness—like comfort in the water, the ability to wade or swim, and general mobility—is helpful, but you don’t need to be an athlete to learn.
The most physically demanding parts for beginners are walking in the water while managing the kite, body dragging, and practicing repeated water starts. Lessons are paced to your comfort level, and breaks are built in naturally as you reset equipment or wait for wind lulls. If you can move comfortably in the ocean and enjoy being active outdoors, you’re likely well-suited for kiteboarding lessons.
Should I be concerned about sharks?
Shark encounters in kiteboarding areas like Kanahā Beach Park are extremely rare, and thousands of kiteboarders use these waters every year without incident. Kiteboarders spend much of their time on the surface, moving through the water with a large board and colorful kite above them, which naturally reduces the likelihood of unwanted interactions with marine life.
The water at Kanahā is shallow in many sections, with sandy bottoms and high visibility—conditions that are generally not associated with shark activity. While the ocean is a natural environment and wildlife is always possible, the risk is very low, and instructors choose locations that align with common use by kiteboarders, swimmers, windsurfers, and other ocean users.
Why is there a minimum and maximum weight?
Weight guidelines exist because kite size and power must match the rider’s body weight to maintain proper control, safety, and performance.
- Minimum weight: Riders who are too light may find even the smallest kite sizes produce more pull than they can safely manage, especially when winds increase.
- Maximum weight: Heavier riders may require larger kites to generate enough power, and if wind conditions or available equipment can’t safely match that power requirement, the lesson may be adjusted for safety.
These limits ensure the kite can be tuned correctly for the student, allowing for better learning, easier handling, and a safer overall experience.
