Description
Kite, Glide & Ride: Learn at Kanahā Kite Beach!
Kiteboarding is a sport that rewards patience and proper progression. That's why lessons are structured methodically: beginners start with trainer kites on land (ground school), mastering kite control, steering, power management, emergency stopping, and launching before ever stepping near the water. Once kite-flying fundamentals are solid on land, you'll move to full-power LEI (leading edge inflatable) kites in the water for body surfing behind the kite, one-handed flying, upwind riding, and your first board rides. All lessons are private or semi-private, meaning your instructor's full attention is on you and your progress throughout every session.
Kite Beach sits on Maui's north shore, just two minutes from Kahului Airport, and benefits from some of the most consistent trade winds in the world. Long, open sandy beaches give students and instructors room to practice safely, while the shallow water areas near shore make early water sessions manageable. Multi-day packages (2-, 3-, or 5-day) allow you to move through the full progression — from ground school through body surfing, water starts, first board rides, upwind riding, turns, and beyond. Advanced riders visiting Maui for the first time can book an orientation session to get local knowledge, learn the ride areas, and review self-rescue techniques essential for Kanaha (there are no jet skis standing by, so self-rescue is a critical skill).
All Lesson, Courses, & Rental Options
- 1-Day Kiteboarding Course — 3 hours: Best for first-timers who want to try kiteboarding and learn the fundamentals including kite control, safety systems, body dragging, and introductory board skills. Great introduction to the sport without committing to a full progression course.
- 3-Day Course — 9 hours total: Ideal for beginners who want more consistent progression over multiple days. Typically structured as 3 hours per day, allowing students to move from kite control into water starts and early rides with much more repetition and confidence-building.
- 5-Day Course — 15 hours total: Best for guests serious about progressing beyond the basics. More time on the water allows students to improve riding consistency, board control, turns, and confidence in Maui’s wind conditions.
- 10-Day Course — 30 hours total: The most complete training option for students who want maximum progression and water time. This course is designed to help riders work toward independent riding, upwind riding, transitions, and stronger overall confidence handling kiteboarding conditions.
- Private 2-Hour Kiteboard Lesson: Best for personalized coaching, refreshers, or focused skill development. Great for nervous beginners, intermediate riders wanting technique help, or experienced kiters looking to improve specific skills.
- Complete Kiteboarding Rental: Includes the full setup for experienced, independent kiteboarders who already know how to safely launch, land, ride upwind, self-rescue, and assess conditions.
- Kite-Only Rental: Best for experienced riders who already have a board and only need a kite setup suited for Maui’s wind conditions.
- Kiteboard Rental: Best for experienced riders who already have kite/control gear and only need the board itself. Great option for travelers bringing partial equipment.

FAQs
Is kiteboarding hard to learn?
Kiteboarding has a learning curve, but with proper, structured instruction it is very achievable. The key is learning in the right order — kite control on land before attempting the water, and body surfing before board riding. Most beginners progress through ground school and into water kite-flying within one or two sessions. Getting fully up on the board typically takes a multi-day course of 3–5 sessions.
How many days does it take to learn to kitesurf?
This varies by individual, but a typical beginner can expect: Day 1 — ground school and trainer kite fundamentals; Day 2 — full LEI kite, water entry, body surfing; Day 3+ — water starts and first board rides; Day 5+ — upwind riding and turns. Multi-day packages of 2, 3, and 5 days are available to take you through progressive stages.
Why are kiteboarding lessons private?
Kiteboarding is a powerful, technical sport that requires personalized attention for safety reasons. Having your instructor fully focused on you — especially in the early stages with a powerful kite — significantly reduces risk and accelerates your learning. All lessons are conducted as private or semi-private sessions.
What does "ground school" involve?
Ground school is the first and most important stage of kiteboarding. You'll fly a trainer kite on the beach and learn to steer, control power, perform emergency stops, and handle the kite one-handed. This typically takes 1–2 sessions and builds the foundation for everything that follows. Don't skip it!
I'm already a kiteboarder visiting Maui for the first time. What should I book?
Experienced kiteboarders should book the Maui Orientation Session. Kanaha has specific local conditions, ride areas, and safety considerations — including the fact that there are no jet ski rescues available. Your instructor will cover local rules, self-rescue techniques, ride zones, and give you tips and pointers to make your time on the water safer and more fun.
What are the wind conditions like at Kite Beach?
Kite Beach (Kanaha Beach Park) on Maui's north shore is recognized as one of the world's premier kiteboarding locations. Trade winds blow consistently from the northeast, typically picking up through the morning and reaching their strongest in the afternoon. Beginner lessons are sometimes scheduled in lighter morning winds, while advanced riders take advantage of the stronger afternoon conditions.
