Description

Catch Your First Wave: Surf Lessons in Kihei, Maui!

Feel the rush of standing up and riding your first Maui wave on the warm, beginner-friendly waters of Kihei’s south shore. With steady rolling waves, sunny ocean views, and local instructors who love sharing the stoke, this surf lesson is built for everyone—from total first-timers to surfers ready to sharpen their technique. Kalama Park is one of Maui’s favorite learning spots, offering consistent, rideable waves in a setting that feels exciting without being overwhelming.
Your lesson starts on land with the essentials: ocean safety, paddling technique, wave timing, board positioning, and how to pop up with confidence. Then it’s straight into the water, where your instructor stays nearby to help you read the waves, line up correctly, and catch as many rides as possible. The surf zone features gentle, predictable waves that break in shallow water, giving beginners a supportive place to practice while still delivering the real thrill of surfing.
Whether you’re learning to stand for the first time, working on smoother turns, or booking private coaching to refine your skills, each session is tailored to your level. Beginner lessons include all necessary gear, including a properly sized soft-top surfboard, rash guard, and reef booties. By the end, you’ll understand why so many people come to Maui for one lesson and leave completely hooked on surfing.

All Surf Lesson Options

  1. Surfing Beginner Group — 2 hours: Best for first-time surfers who want the most affordable lesson option. This is a shared group class with other guests and includes a land lesson, safety talk, gear, and in-water coaching at Kalama Park in Kihei.
  2. Group of 4+ Semi-Private — 2 hours: Best for families or friend groups of four or more who want a more personal lesson while still keeping the price lower per person. Your group gets a shared-private setup with more focused attention than a standard group class.
  3. Group of 3 Semi-Private — 2 hours: Best for small groups of three who want a more customized experience. This option gives your group more individual coaching time while still keeping the social feel of learning together.
  4. Surfing Beginner Private — 2 hours: Best for guests who want one-on-one coaching, maximum personal attention, or a lesson tailored closely to their pace and comfort level. Great for nervous beginners, skill-building, or anyone who prefers private instruction.
  5. 3-Day Kids Surf Camp — 6 hours total: A summer surf camp for kids, with 2 hours per day over 3 days. Includes safety talks, basic surf theory, plenty of water time, and gear. Kids are placed in small groups based on weight and experience.
  6. 3-Day Group Course — 6 hours total: Best for adults or older students who want more than a one-time lesson. This course gives guests three 2-hour sessions to build confidence, improve technique, and get more consistent wave time.
  7. 5-Day Group Course — 10 hours total: Best for guests who want the most progression. With five 2-hour sessions, this option gives more time to practice paddling, timing, pop-ups, turning, positioning, and overall wave confidence.

FAQs

Do I need experience to take a surf lesson?

No — beginner lessons are designed for first-timers with no prior surfing experience. Your instructor will teach you everything from scratch, starting with a land lesson before you ever paddle out.

What are the waves like at Kalama Park in Kihei?

The south shore of Kihei offers consistent, rolling waves that break gently over a shallow reef. These waves are ideal for beginners — predictable and manageable, without a large shore break. The water is warm and clear year-round, and conditions are typically calmest in the morning when lessons are held.

Will I stand up on my first lesson?

Many first-time students do catch at least one ride to their feet during a 2-hour beginner lesson. That said, progression varies by individual and conditions. Your instructor will be right there with you in the water, pushing boards and giving immediate feedback to give you the best chance of success.

What board will I use?

Beginners use large, stable soft-top surfboards that are safe and easy to ride. Board sizes are matched to your weight and experience level — bigger riders get more flotation, lighter riders get a more nimble option.

When is the best time of year to surf in Kihei?

Surfing is available year-round on Maui's south shore. Winter months (November–March) can bring larger, more powerful south swells, while summer is typically cleaner and smaller — ideal for beginners. Morning sessions are consistently the best regardless of season.

Cancellation Policy

We have a minimum 24-hour cancellation policy. No refunds will be issued for no-shows or late cancellations within 24 hours of your scheduled lesson start time.
