FAQs
Why do participants need to be strong swimmers to rent an SUP?
Stand-up paddleboard rentals are self-guided, meaning there is no instructor on the water providing assistance. While SUP boards are stable, paddlers may still fall into the water due to wind, boat wake, or changing conditions. Being a strong swimmer ensures that you’re comfortable handling yourself in open water, can climb back onto the board independently, and can manage unexpected situations calmly.
Ocean conditions can also change quickly, even on generally calm days. Strong swimming ability provides an essential margin of safety and allows paddlers to enjoy their time on the water with confidence and independence.
Where can I bring my SUP rental?
SUP rentals in Kihei are best enjoyed close to shore, where water conditions are typically calmer and easier to manage. Most experienced paddlers use their boards to cruise along the coastline, explore nearby beaches, or paddle parallel to shore while enjoying views of the West Maui Mountains and neighboring islands.
Paddlers should avoid venturing far offshore, entering boat channels, or paddling in areas with heavy marine traffic. Staying within visible distance of the launch area and choosing routes that match the day’s conditions helps ensure a safe and enjoyable paddle. Always assess wind direction before heading out, as offshore winds can make returning to shore more challenging.
What marine life can I see paddling in Kihei, Maui?
Kihei’s calm, clear waters offer excellent opportunities to observe marine life from above the surface. While sightings are never guaranteed, paddlers often see green sea turtles, schools of reef fish, rays, and occasionally octopus in shallow reef areas. The quiet nature of paddleboarding allows you to glide without disturbing wildlife, making encounters more likely than with louder water activities.
You may also spot spinner dolphins farther offshore and, during the winter months (roughly December through April), humpback whales breaching in the distance. Seabirds such as frigatebirds and terns are commonly seen overhead, adding to the experience of being immersed in Maui’s coastal ecosystem.
