FAQs
Is this SUP lesson suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. One of the greatest appeals of stand-up paddleboarding is that no previous experience is required. SUP is much less demanding than traditional surfing and is typically learned on calm, flat water using large, stable boards. Because of this, it’s accessible to a wide range of ages and ability levels.
The lesson is paced gently and focuses on balance, basic paddle strokes, and board control, making it a great introduction for first-timers. SUP is also a popular choice for families, couples, and groups because everyone can participate together and progress at their own comfort level.
Is paddleboarding physically demanding?
Stand-up paddleboarding is generally considered a low-impact activity. While it does engage your core, legs, and arms, it doesn’t require high levels of strength or endurance. Most of the effort comes from balance and gentle paddling rather than explosive movement or heavy exertion.
Because lessons take place in calm water and include breaks as needed, most people find SUP to be relaxing and enjoyable rather than exhausting. You do not need to be in peak physical condition to participate—just comfortable being on the water and moving at an easy pace.
Will I be able to stand up during the lesson?
Many beginners are able to stand up during their first SUP lesson, thanks to the wide, stable boards used for learning and the calm water conditions. That said, everyone progresses at their own pace. Some students prefer to start on their knees and stand when they feel ready, while others stand up fairly quickly.
There’s no pressure to stand immediately—the goal is to feel comfortable, balanced, and confident on the board. Your instructor will guide you through proper technique and help you decide when it feels right to stand.
What marine life can I see during the SUP lesson at Kalama Beach Park?
While marine life sightings are never guaranteed, Kalama Beach Park offers a great chance to see a variety of ocean life, especially on calm days with clear water. From your board, you may spot tropical reef fish, schools of small baitfish, sea turtles, and occasionally rays gliding along the sandy bottom. Because paddleboarding is quiet and non-intrusive, it allows you to observe the water without disturbing wildlife.
You may also see seabirds like terns and frigatebirds flying overhead or diving for fish nearby. SUP gives you a unique vantage point—standing above the water—making it easier to look down into the shallows and appreciate Maui’s coastal ecosystem while enjoying a peaceful paddle.
What age range is SUP suitable for?
Stand-up paddleboarding is suitable for a wide range of ages, which is one of the reasons it’s so popular. Most children can participate comfortably around ages 7–8 and up, once they have the balance, coordination, and attention span to follow basic instruction. Teens, adults, and older participants often find SUP to be an enjoyable, low-impact activity that can be adapted to their pace and comfort level.
Families frequently enjoy SUP together because it’s approachable, flexible, and doesn’t require prior board-sport experience. As long as participants can swim and feel comfortable on the water, SUP is an excellent activity across generations.
Can friends or family watch from the beach during the lesson?
Yes, absolutely. Kalama Beach Park is very spectator-friendly, with a wide sandy shoreline and grassy areas where friends and family can relax and watch the lesson. They’ll be able to see you practicing on the water, take photos, or simply enjoy the beach while you paddle. Many guests appreciate having loved ones nearby for encouragement, especially during their first time on a board.
Can SUP lessons lead into wave riding or surfing later on?
Yes—SUP is an excellent gateway into wave riding and surfing. Once you’re comfortable balancing, paddling, and steering on a stand-up paddleboard, transitioning into catching small waves becomes much more approachable. SUP helps build essential skills like board awareness, timing, and reading water movement, all of which directly translate into surfing.
For those interested, instructors can introduce basic wave concepts in gentle conditions or help guide your progression toward surf-style SUP or traditional surfing lessons. Many people start with flat-water SUP and later discover a love for riding waves, making it a natural and rewarding next step.
