Description

Weekly Summer Surf Camp in New Smyrna Beach, Florida

Since 1985, this weekly summer surf camp has been a New Smyrna Beach tradition — and it's been the official summer surf camp for the city's Leisure Services Department for over 30 years. Campers ages 6 and up spend five weekday mornings on the sand and in the water, grouped by age and skill level, working through paddling technique, pop-ups, wave reading, and ocean safety with a team of longtime local instructors.

There's a rhythm to camp week that keeps kids (and adults) coming back summer after summer: a 3-hour daily session, cold watermelon on the break, a Friday pizza party, and a complimentary camp T-shirt. Surfboards are provided for every session, and families are encouraged to surf together. With advance booking recommended and walk-ups welcome when space allows, it's an easy way to spend a week — or several — in the water.

FAQs

Is a surfboard provided?

Yes — surfboard use is included with every lesson and camp session, so there's no need to bring your own.

Are lessons weather dependent?

Yes, sessions run surf-conditions permitting. Your guides monitor the swell and will work with you on rescheduling if conditions aren't suitable.

Is a waiver required?

Yes, all participants are required to complete a signed consent and liability waiver before their session.

What does a typical camp day look like?

Each day includes a 3-hour session (2 hours 45 minutes for the youngest age group) of surf instruction and ocean safety, with a watermelon break, followed by a Friday pizza party and camp T-shirt to close out the week.

How are campers grouped?

Campers are grouped by age and skill level, with ages 6–7 kept in a separate group from ages 8 and up.

Can I walk up without a reservation?

Advance booking is recommended since sessions can fill up.

Is there a surf contest during camp season?

Yes, your guides host an optional surf contest open to camp participants; a reservation is required to compete.

What should campers eat beforehand?

A light, non-greasy meal is recommended before camp — think cereal, toast, or pancakes — eaten with enough time to settle before hitting the water. A big or heavy meal right before paddling out can make for an uncomfortable morning.

Can parents stay and watch, or should they drop off and leave?

Either is fine. Parents are welcome to stay on the beach and watch, or drop off and return about 15 minutes before camp ends. The program is built around campers listening closely to their coaches, so a bit of independence is part of the experience.

How soon can I get my camper started?

Right away — camps run weekly all summer, and private lessons or brush-up sessions are also available for campers who want extra one-on-one time before or alongside their camp week.
