Description

Explore the Largest Reef in North America — Two Sites, One Incredible Trip!

Key Largo sits at the gateway to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, home to the third-largest barrier reef in the world and the largest in North America. This daily boat trip visits two reef sites within John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the surrounding sanctuary — giving snorkelers and certified divers over an hour of in-water time at each location.

Sites visited include Molasses Reef, French Reef, the iconic Christ of the Abyss Statue, Grecian Rocks, and a rotating selection of other locations across more than 100 unique sites in seven reef systems. The reefs are formed from limestone over 5,000 years old and are home to more than 80 species of stony and soft coral and hundreds of species of fish. Expect sightings of parrotfish, spiny lobster, eagle rays, sea turtles, nurse sharks, and barracuda — with some luck, much more.

You'll travel aboard the Sea Dweller III, a custom 50-foot vessel and the only Marine Management boat in the Florida Keys. With an open bow, flybridge, and space for up to 28 guests, it's a far more comfortable ride than the standard small dive boat. Complimentary snacks, cookies, and ice water are provided, and reef-safe sunscreen is available on board.

Duration of Adventure

  • Total trip duration: 3.5 hours
  • In-water time: Over 1 hour at each of 2 locations (2+ hours total in the water)
  • Please check in at least 30 minutes before your tour departure time.

Location / Where to Meet

  1. Check in Address: 105 Laguna Ave, E5, Key Largo FL 33037
  2. The dive center and dock are adjacent to the Holiday Inn Key Largo Resort.
  3. Traffic in the Keys is generally heavier than you think and than map apps predict. Give yourself plenty of drive time to ensure you arrive on time for check in and do not miss the boat. This is ESPECIALLY important on weekends, holidays, all summer and the last half of December.

Ages & Requirements

  • Minimum age to ride (boat only): 2 years old
  • Non-swimming riders (age 2+) may join as boat riders only, without entering the water
  • Minimum age to snorkel: 4 years old (must be able to swim)
  • Snorkeler's and Divers under 18 years old must book tour with an adult!
  • This is a combined diver and snorkeler charter.
  • Items NOT allowed on the boat are drugs including medical marijuana, smoking of any kind: cigarettes/cigar/vape/e-cig, pets, emotional support animals, guns (including concealed carry), spearguns, or any item the Captain deems unsafe to be on the vessel, bad attitudes and bananas (they are bad luck on boats and our Captains get cranky when they see them!)
  • Every member of our crew have the right to prevent a passenger from entering the water if they demonstrate swimming skills that are insufficient for the conditions on the trip.

Scuba Diving Additional Requirements

  1. Divers must be certified (certification cards checked before boarding). Divers are required to bring a copy (digital or hard copy) of their diver certification from a recognized training agency (PADI, SSI, NAUI, etc.,) and present it upon check in.
  2. If your last dive was more than 1 years ago but less than 2 years ago, you will be required to dive with a guide for the first trip.
  3. If your last dive was more than 2 years since you're last logged dive, in accordance with industry and training agency safety standards and recommendations, you will be required to complete a Refresher Course prior to diving. You may complete the course with us or with another shop/instructor of your choice. If you complete the course elsewhere, please bring proof of successful completion with you to check in.
  4. Our standard dive trips DO NOT include a guide.
  5. If you are making a reservation for 1 diver, you want to be buddied up with another single diver and do NOT want to hire a guide unless you absolutely have to.
  6. There will be a medical questionnaire that must be filled out ahead of the dive. If you answer yes to certain questions, you may be asked to obtain a signed doctor's note clearing you for the activity. The questionnaire used can be found under Diver Medical Questionnaire.

Wildlife Guidelines

Please be respectful of the fact that coral is a living organism, and any standing, touching, or knocking over will irreparably damage it. Coral takes a very long time to grow and is essential to our marine reefs. Please also be respectful of all marine animals, including but not limited to turtles, rays, sharks, and barracuda. Never chase, harass, feed, or touch any marine species. Enjoy their company from a distance and calmly move away if you are in their path.

Your guides are active participants in coral restoration and reef conservation. Please follow all crew guidelines during the trip.

FAQs

What marine life can I see when snorkeling or diving at Key Largo reefs?

The reefs here are part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, one of the most biodiverse marine environments in North America. You can commonly spot parrotfish, spiny lobster, eagle rays, spotted eagle rays, sea turtles, nurse sharks, and barracuda. The reef structure consists of over 80 species of stony and soft coral and is home to hundreds of species of tropical fish. Sightings vary by season, water conditions, and site — but there's always something to see on these reefs.

What dive sites will we visit?

Your guides visit a rotating selection of more than 100 sites across seven reef systems. Frequent destinations include Molasses Reef (one of the most vibrant coral reefs in the Keys), French Reef, the Christ of the Abyss Statue (one of the most photographed underwater statues in the world), and Grecian Rocks. The specific sites visited each day depend on conditions and your guides' assessment — they always aim for the best experience.

What is diving and snorkeling like at Key Largo? What is the depth and visibility like?

Key Largo is known for calm, clear waters and excellent visibility, especially in the summer months. The shallow reef sites are ideal for snorkeling and beginner diving — most are accessible at relatively shallow depths. Visibility can range from good to exceptional depending on weather, tide, and season. March can be more variable, while summer tends to offer the best conditions.

Do I need my certification card to dive?

Yes. Certification cards are checked for all scuba divers before boarding the Sea Dweller III. If you have misplaced your physical card, many agencies now offer digital cards through their apps — confirm with your certifying agency. Non-certified guests are welcome as snorkelers, boat riders, or Discover Scuba participants (see separate listing).

Do I need to know how to swim to snorkel?

Yes — all snorkelers must be able to swim and be comfortable in open ocean. Pool noodles are available in limited quantities for additional buoyancy. Snorkel vests are included and are a great tool for those still building comfort in open water.

Can I wear glasses or contacts while snorkeling?

You cannot wear glasses with a snorkel mask, but contact lenses work great and are often the best option for clear underwater vision. Prescription masks are available for an extra free from strengths -1.5 through -6. Fun fact: everything appears about 25% larger and closer underwater, which helps even without correction.

What sunscreen should I use?

Reef-safe sunscreen is required. Common sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens that are absorbed by corals and cause bleaching and toxicity. Reef-safe formulas avoid these ingredients. For the best protection, look for "non-nano" mineral sunscreen, which uses particles too large to be absorbed by coral. Your crew will check labels before boarding — reef-safe sunscreen is also available on the boat.

Can I snorkel with a beard or mustache?

You can snorkel with a beard or mustache, but facial hair can prevent a tight seal between the mask and your face, which may cause water to leak in. It is often recommended to shave at least your mustache before your trip. If you'd prefer not to, bring petroleum jelly or chapstick — coating your mustache before putting on the mask may help create a seal.

How do I choose between a non-private and a private guide?

Ok so you decided to hire a guide, now what? You need to decide whether you would like to be with a Private Guide or a Non-Private Guide. What's the difference? Our Non-Private Guides are a GREAT cost effective option for getting a great tour of the dive site and having one of our PHENOMENAL dive pros show you where the resident critters typically hang out as well as not having to keep track of navigation, depth, time, etc. All you have to do is follow your guide and check out the cool stuff they show you while mainly just having to tell them how much air you have as they periodically check on your supply. As the cost effective option, our Non-Private guides could have several other divers in their group. We try to limit the number of divers to no more than 6-7 per guide but sometimes depending on the circumstances might push it to 8 if absolutely necessary (ex, 2 groups of 4 or something along those lines). But there is the possibility of differing levels of skill, experience, ability, etc. and it's the guide's responsibility to #1 keep all divers safe and #1.1 show you an amazing time. So if someone is an air hog and you don't get as much bottom time as you would like, or someone has trouble equalizing and has to go back to the boat, etc., you may possibly experience some of the technical difficulties that come with diving with other unknown divers. If something like that happens, usually, the guide will bring the group to the surface and ensure the diver with issues gets safely back to the boat and then if time and air supply permit, will take the rest of the group down to resume the dive. Our Non-Private guides are PERFECT for divers who would like to be guided but save some money, divers that are very comfortable or experienced and would rather have someone else navigate or show them the hidden gems on the sites and divers who don't have a buddy and needed to hire a guide to join the trip. Our Private Guides cost a few bucks more, but you get WAY more. Our private guides are the exact same Dive Pros as our non-private guides and will still give you the same great tour and keep track of everything for you like navigation, depth, time, but since they are focused on you and your buddy/group ONLY, there is WAY more personalized attention and flexibility with planning the dive as you are the ONLY ones they are paying attention to. Private Guides are PERFECT for divers that have a bit of budget flexibility, divers who don't want to share their dive with strangers but still want a guide, divers who want/need extra assistance/attention and divers who want to be pampered and spoiled.

What is your policy on Solo Divers?

In order to dive with Sea Dwellers, it is required to have a dive buddy. If you don't have a dive buddy joining you, we will paid you up with an 'insta-buddy' if we have any other solo divers that didn't opt to be guided. If, at check-in time, there are no other solo divers on the trip, you will be required to pay for a guide. In the event that you do not wish to pay for the guide, you will not be able to join the trip and we will not be able to provide a refund as our solo diver policy is stated on our website, online booking platform, all confirmation emails, reminder emails and is clearly stated during all phone reservation calls.
