Description
Kennebec Pass to Durango Mountain Bike Tour on the Colorado Trail
High in the La Plata Mountains - the dramatic peaks that rise to the west of downtown Durango - the Colorado Trail crosses Kennebec Pass before descending all the way to the valley floor. This tour rides that legendary segment: a point-to-point alpine descent that riders consistently call their favorite section of the entire Colorado Trail.
Before you even touch a pedal, the 4x4 drive to the trailhead is an adventure on its own. From the summit of Kennebec Pass, panoramic views stretch across the Durango valley to peaks near Silverton. Then comes the riding: 1,800 vertical feet of climbing spread across the day, rewarded with 6,500 feet of total descending.
The day begins with a descent to Junction Creek for a water and snack break, then a significant climb to High Point where the group pauses to take in the views and have lunch. From there, a massive final descent carries you all the way back down to Durango. The shuttle driver meets the group at the bottom with snacks and cold drinks for the ride back into town.
