Intro to Backcountry Skiing & Splitboarding Course - Summit County, CO

Ready to take your first steps beyond the resort? This one-day introductory course is designed to give you the confidence and foundational skills to start exploring Colorado’s backcountry safely and efficiently. Led by professional guides and educators, this hands-on course turns the mountains into your classroom—covering everything from touring gear and transitions to avalanche awareness and terrain management.

Whether you’re a skier or splitboarder, you’ll spend a full day in the field learning uphill travel techniques, backcountry navigation, and how to use your avalanche safety equipment. It’s the perfect stepping stone for anyone curious about backcountry travel and an excellent way to gain experience before taking an AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course. With guidance tailored to your pace and ability, you’ll leave feeling confident, capable, and inspired to explore beyond the lifts.

Location / Where to Meet

Colorado Adventure Guides: Silverthorne Basecamp
We will meet at our Silverthorne Basecamp, or a convenient rendezvous point, gear up and head to the field. We will spend the day in field instruction, where we turn the backcountry into an experiential classroom where you will learn and hone your winter backcountry skills. Your guide will be in touch no later than 48 hours before the start of the trip to discuss adventure details. At that time, an alternative meeting location may be designated.

Ages & Requirements

  1. Minimum Age: 16 years old
  2. Ability Level: Participants must be confident skiing or riding advanced blue to black terrain at a resort. Experience on ungroomed or variable snow is recommended.
  3. Fitness Level: This is a physically demanding full-day course that includes uphill travel on touring equipment and extended time outdoors. Participants should have a moderate to high fitness level.
  4. Equipment: Alpine touring skis or splitboard setup with skins, avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe are required. Rentals are available at our Silverthorne basecamp.

How physically fit to I need to be to take this course?

Colorado Adventure Guides’ priority is keeping our patrons and students safe. Our instructors are trained to recognize potentially hazardous situations in the backcountry; they plan and operate accordingly. Prior to the start of any course or backcountry trip you will complete a brief health history. The failure to disclose pertinent information could result in serious harm, even death, to the signing participant, other guests and/or the guide. All information submitted is completely confidential; it is for the guide’s use and would only be shared in the event of an emergency with medical and/or rescue personnel directly caring for the guest. This can be a physically demanding course, and your ability to enjoy the adventure depends on your health and fitness, thus it’s recommended that you are in good physical condition.

Do I need to be a good skier/snowboarder to take this course?

Our courses can be taken on alpine touring skis or splitboard. Alpine touring skis and splitboards are available for rent from our Silverthorne, CO basecamp. Students on skis or boards must be comfortable in steep blue to black terrain at the ski resort. Students should be able to travel off-trail on ungroomed or unmaintained terrain and bring appropriate equipment for traveling on snow.

When and how do I meet up with our instructor?

You will meet at our Silverthorne basecamp. For field-based days, students will be encouraged to use our CAG company vans or to carpool to help alleviate trailhead overcrowding.

Should I tip my course Instructor?

Your instructors work hard before, during, and after your course to provide you with the best safety education and a great experience, and while not expected, gratuities are always highly appreciated. If you had a safe, educational, and fun experience, gratuities typically range from 15-20%

Cancel at least 14 days before your course or camp to receive a refund, minus a 10% admin fee.

Cancellations within 14 days are non-refundable unless we can fill your spot. If we can, you’ll receive a refund minus the 10% fee.

Rescheduling Policy

You can reschedule at least 14 days before your course or camp for a 10% admin fee.

Within 14 days, rescheduling is only possible if we can fill your spot. If we can, a 10% fee applies. If not, rescheduling is not available.
