Description

Introduction to Ice Climbing in North Conway, NH

North Conway is home to world-class ice climbing. From beginner routes to steep and mixed climbing, we have it all. Let our guides take you into frozen wonderland. This one-day course is an introduction to waterfall ice climbing and general mountaineering.
Learn what it takes to climb a frozen waterfall. Ice climbing is a fun way to expand your climbing portfolio, add to your list of mountaineering skills, or simply to enjoy winter weather in a new way. Our programs aim to provide you with the knowledge to use ice axes and crampons, move efficiently over varied terrain, and select appropriate climbs.
This ice climbing course is best suited for novice winter climbers. The first half of the day will be spent learning about the equipment, crampons, ice axes, anchors and belays. The second half of the day will be spent climbing to gain a practical appreciation for efficient movement over moderately angled snow and ice terrain. IMCS provides all technical gear. Course participants will need to provide a day pack and appropriate clothing. Get on the Ice with our Ice Climbing Basics Course!
We offer scheduled courses, clinics and trips for climbers of all levels of experience and ability. All of the climbing programs we offer may be booked by private arrangement for individuals or groups. Private guiding allows your needs to be addressed in a personalized manner and has proven to be an excellent way for individuals and groups to learn at your own pace. Our guides are flexible and love a new adventure–tell us what you want to accomplish during your time with us and if conditions allow, we’ll deliver!

What to Bring / Wear

Clothing is as important a piece of equipment as your boots and ice axe. Hypothermia is the leading cause of death in the White Mountains. Being properly dressed is essential to enjoying your outdoor adventures.  See FAQ below for a detailed packing list. A full packing list will also be provided in your confirmation.
Layering is an important part of winter. If your sweat isn’t wicked away from your body for quicker evaporation, your body core temperature rises, producing more sweat. Sweat is what causes chills, chafing, and excess use of energy. When your body is not wasting energy producing heat to warm you up or producing sweat to cool you down, you will have more energy to hike and climb. This means more energy and endurance to go further, faster, and more comfortably in all types of weather.  Remember, you have to carry all your clothing with you, so packing efficiently is important. If you can’t wear it all at once, don’t bring it.  If you have questions about how many or which items to bring, please call us. We expect that you will be dressed and ready to go upon arrival to your lesson.
