Description

Private Full-Day Guided Multi-Pitch Rock Climbing at Independence Monument

Experience the iconic Independence Monument, a 300-foot sandstone tower in Colorado National Monument, on a full-day guided climbing adventure. This 4-pitch climb takes you along Otto’s Route, first ascended in 1911, offering a combination of crack climbing, face climbing, and exposure that makes desert tower climbing unforgettable. With the guidance of a certified instructor, you’ll learn multipitch techniques, including belaying, anchor building, route finding, and rappelling, all while enjoying one of the most distinctive desert towers in the Western United States.

The adventure begins with a 2-mile approach (4.5 miles round-trip) along a scenic trail, giving you views of the surrounding canyons and formations. Once at the base, you’ll ascend sandy, yet mostly solid sandstone, which provides a unique climbing texture different from the Front Range or Moab’s sandstone. Otto’s Route provides moderate challenges at 5.9, making it ideal for climbers with some experience who want to test multipitch skills in a quiet, less crowded setting. The summit rewards you with sweeping vistas of the Monument Canyon and the distant La Sal Mountains, making the effort worthwhile.
This full-day climb offers more than just vertical exposure. Along the way, your guide will share tips for desert climbing safety, natural history, and sustainable practices to preserve the fragile sandstone environment. Independence Monument stands apart from other climbing areas in the region due to its remote feel, historical significance, and the opportunity to practice technical skills in a multipitch desert setting.

FAQs

Is Independence Monument suitable for beginners?

This climb is best for climbers with some experience due to multipitch techniques and exposure. Beginners can participate if comfortable with 5.9 climbs and learning multipitch skills under guidance.

What type of climbing is at Independence Monument?

Climbing is mostly traditional sandstone with a mix of crack and face climbing. Routes are 4–6 pitches, requiring double ropes for safe rappelling.

How long is the approach to the base?

Expect a 4.5-mile round-trip hike (about 2 miles, 45–60 minutes each way) from the parking lot to the base of the tower.

Is Independence Monument crowded?

Independence Monument is less crowded than nearby desert climbing areas, providing a more secluded experience despite its popularity.

Can I rappel down from the summit?

Yes. All routes are equipped for double-rope rappels, and your guide will manage all descent procedures.

What’s the best time of year to climb Independence Monument?

Spring and fall are ideal for cooler temperatures. Summer can be hot, and winter may have snow or ice in shaded areas.

Which guided multi-pitch climb should I choose?

Here’s how our classic Moab-area multi-pitch climbs compare, from most approachable to most challenging:

  • Looking Glass Arch: A great intro to multi-pitch climbing. This moderate climb tops out on a massive sandstone arch, followed by a thrilling rappel through the span—perfect for beginners or those new to desert towers.
  • Ancient Art: Famous for its wild corkscrew summit. Shorter and less committing than the bigger towers, but with a dramatic and unforgettable finish. A great next step up from Looking Glass.
  • Independence Monument: A historic desert tower in Colorado National Monument. This is a longer, full-day climb with more pitches, offering a mix of history, scenery, and adventure for climbers ready for a bigger objective.
  • Castleton Tower: One of the most iconic desert climbs in the world. More physically demanding and committing than the others, it’s best suited for climbers with prior outdoor experience looking for a true bucket-list achievement.
