Description
Catch the Trade Winds & Learn to Windsurf on Oʻahu!
Windsurfing is the sport that helped put O'ahu's wind-swept beaches on the map, and it's still one of the best ways to feel the island's trade winds. Grab the boom, pull the sail upright, and feel the board start to glide beneath you. Many first-time windsurfers get a feel for balancing, steering, and catching the wind during their very first lesson.
Your session starts on the beach with an overview of setting up, understanding the wind, and practicing body position on land. Then it's into the warm water on a large, stable board with a smaller sail, so you can focus on balance and steering while your instructor coaches you through a two-way radio helmet. It's a fun, full-body workout that leaves you feeling like you've picked up a classic island skill.
Lessons are taught at Wai'alae Beach Park in Kahala, with alternate beaches chosen based on the day's wind. Learn from a team led by a former champion freestyle and wave windsurfer who has competed internationally, in a private lesson or alongside your own small group.

FAQs
Who will my instructor be?
You'll work with either our founder or another member of our team, all of whom are experienced watermen and waterwomen. Our founder is a competitive watersports athlete originally from the Dominican Republic who started out as a champion freestyle and wave windsurfer before mastering kiteboarding, surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding. In 2019, he was selected as the Dominican Republic's top windsurfer to compete in the Olympic qualifiers.
What certifications do your instructors hold, and what safety measures do you take?
Our founder is a certified International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) Level 2 Instructor and holds Red Cross Lifeguard and First Aid/CPR certifications. We are a fully insured business, and our kiteboarding and windsurfing lessons are taught with two-way radio helmets so your instructor can coach you in real time while you're on the water.
What languages are lessons taught in?
Lessons are available in English and Spanish.
What will I learn in my first windsurfing lesson?
Your Level 1 lesson covers beach setup, an understanding of wind conditions, and body positioning practice on land. You'll then head out on a large board with a small sail for extra stability and practice riding back and forth.
What comes after Level 1?
At Level 2 (Intermediate), riders move to a smaller board and larger sail for more power and speed, learn to ride upwind, start using a harness, perfect the beach start, and work on a basic jibe. At Level 3 (Advanced), riders learn to water start, power jibe, and use foot straps. Lessons beyond Level 1 are currently offered only when you bring your own intermediate or advanced equipment.
Why do you use radio helmets?
Two-way radio helmets let your instructor talk you through adjustments in real time while you're out on the water, so you don't have to wait until you're back on the beach to get feedback.
Where will my lesson be held?
Most windsurfing lessons are taught at Wai'alae Beach Park in Honolulu. Depending on wind direction, we may move to Waimānalo Bay Beach Park or, during Kona winds, Kuli'ou'ou Beach Park. We'll be in touch if your location changes, and we recommend checking in with us the day before your lesson.
Can I rent windsurfing gear?
Yes. Daily windsurfing rentals are available for independent riders. Check out our equipment rental listing for details.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. All lessons and rentals require an advance reservation and must be paid for ahead of time. We aren't able to accept payment on the beach.
Why don't you teach lessons at Kailua Beach?
There is currently a ban on commercial activity at Kailua Beach Park, which means no business can teach lessons there. Once you're riding independently, you're welcome to kiteboard, windsurf, surf, or paddleboard at Kailua on your own, and independent riders renting gear from us can have it dropped off and picked up at a Kailua residence.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes. For your safety, we require that every guest knows how to swim, regardless of the activity you choose. All guests must also be in good health for physical activity.
Do I need to sign a waiver?
Yes. Each participant must complete their own liability waiver, and anyone under 18 must have their waiver completed by a parent or legal guardian. We ask that you complete the waiver online before your lesson or rental. It only takes a moment and is mobile-friendly.
Are you involved in the local community?
Yes. We're a locally owned and operated family business committed to serving both our local community and visitors from around the world, and to protecting the natural environment that makes these sports possible. We're a member of the Kailua Chamber of Commerce and partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Kailua Kiteboarders Club, a local group that sets safety guidelines and organizes events like beach cleanups.
What sunscreen should I use?
Please use only reef-safe sunscreen — common sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that harm coral reefs and are absorbed by marine organisms. Reef-safe and reef-SAFE sunscreens use non-nano mineral particles that are too large for corals to ingest. Look for products labeled non-nano and free of oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Sun-protective rash guards are an excellent alternative.
