Description
Catch the Trade Winds & Learn to Kiteboard Your Way!
Lessons follow the International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) teaching method, a step-by-step progression used by schools around the world. You'll start on the sand learning to read the spot, set up your gear, and use the safety systems before flying the kite and exploring the wind window. From there, you'll head into the water to body drag, work your way upwind, and try your first water starts with the board. Every session is tailored to where you are, and as you advance, your instructor can validate your progress through the IKO levels.
Lessons take place at Wai'alae Beach Park in Kahala, with Waimānalo Bay and Kuli'ou'ou as alternate spots when the wind shifts. Choose a one-on-one private lesson or bring your own crew of up to four for a semi-private session, and spend the day learning one of the most exciting wind sports on the planet.

FAQs
Who will my instructor be?
You'll work with either our founder or another member of our team, all of whom are experienced watermen and waterwomen. Our founder is a competitive watersports athlete originally from the Dominican Republic who started out as a champion freestyle and wave windsurfer before mastering kiteboarding, surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding. In 2019, he was selected as the Dominican Republic's top windsurfer to compete in the Olympic qualifiers.
What certifications do your instructors hold, and what safety measures do you take?
Our founder is a certified International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) Level 2 Instructor and holds Red Cross Lifeguard and First Aid/CPR certifications. We are a fully insured business, and our kiteboarding and windsurfing lessons are taught with two-way radio helmets so your instructor can coach you in real time while you're on the water.
What languages are lessons taught in?
Lessons are available in English and Spanish.
How long will it take me to learn to kiteboard?
It varies greatly from student to student, but we follow the IKO teaching method, which gives average time frames for each level. Kiteboarder Level 1 (Discovery) typically takes about 2 hours and covers assessing your spot, setting up equipment, using safety systems, and flying the kite on land. Level 2 (Intermediate) takes about 4 hours and covers entering and exiting the water with the kite, body dragging (including upwind), and your first water starts. Level 3 (Independent) takes about 8 hours and covers edging to control your speed, riding upwind, riding toeside, turning, and self-launching.
What is the IKO, and can I get certified?
The International Kiteboarding Organization sets instruction standards recognized by kiteboarding schools around the world. We are the only IKO exclusively-affiliated kiteboarding center on O'ahu. After your lessons, you can request an IKO Kiteboarder Card that certifies the level you've reached, so instructors anywhere in the world will know where to pick up with you. We also recommend downloading the IKO app for training materials and your virtual Kiteboarder card.
Can I book a group lesson and be paired with other students?
No. Group lessons are for 2–4 students, and you'll need to bring your own group. If you're traveling solo, book a private lesson.
Do you teach experienced riders?
Yes. Lessons are customized for beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders. If you're already riding and want to learn higher-level IKO skills, freestyle riding and tricks, wave riding, or kite foiling, reach out to us about Pro Skills coaching.
Where will my lesson be held?
Most kiteboarding lessons are taught at Wai'alae Beach Park in Honolulu. Depending on wind direction, we may move to Waimānalo Bay Beach Park or, during Kona winds, Kuli'ou'ou Beach Park. We'll be in touch if your location changes, and we recommend checking in with us the day before your lesson.
Is kiteboarding safe?
Kiteboarding is safe to practice with proper instruction. The IKO method puts a continual emphasis on safety, and you'll learn how to use your kite's safety systems before you ever head into the water.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. All lessons and rentals require an advance reservation and must be paid for ahead of time. We aren't able to accept payment on the beach.
Why don't you teach lessons at Kailua Beach?
There is currently a ban on commercial activity at Kailua Beach Park, which means no business can teach lessons there. Once you're riding independently, you're welcome to kiteboard, windsurf, surf, or paddleboard at Kailua on your own, and independent riders renting gear from us can have it dropped off and picked up at a Kailua residence.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes. For your safety, we require that every guest knows how to swim, regardless of the activity you choose. All guests must also be in good health for physical activity.
Do I need to sign a waiver?
Yes. Each participant must complete their own liability waiver, and anyone under 18 must have their waiver completed by a parent or legal guardian. We ask that you complete the waiver online before your lesson or rental. It only takes a moment and is mobile-friendly.
Are you involved in the local community?
Yes. We're a locally owned and operated family business committed to serving both our local community and visitors from around the world, and to protecting the natural environment that makes these sports possible. We're a member of the Kailua Chamber of Commerce and partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Kailua Kiteboarders Club, a local group that sets safety guidelines and organizes events like beach cleanups.
What sunscreen should I use?
Please use only reef-safe sunscreen — common sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that harm coral reefs and are absorbed by marine organisms. Reef-safe and reef-SAFE sunscreens use non-nano mineral particles that are too large for corals to ingest. Look for products labeled non-nano and free of oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Sun-protective rash guards are an excellent alternative.
