Description

See Hawaii’s Reefs at Night - Advanced Certification Required!

Get ready to see Honolulu’s underwater world like you’ve never seen it before—after dark, when the reef truly comes alive. Join us aboard our private dive boat, the Diamond T or Diamond T2, for an epic two-tank night dive adventure. With small group sizes and a laid-back vibe, you’ll be able to explore the hidden side of the ocean in full confidence, and maybe even swap a few fish tales with some new dive buddies along the way.
As the sun sinks below the horizon, the real action kicks off. Octopuses emerge from their daytime hideouts, crustaceans scuttle across the sand, and bioluminescent plankton light up the water like underwater fireworks. It’s a whole different kind of dive—wilder, weirder, and way more thrilling. Our experienced guides know all the best nighttime spots around Honolulu’s reefs and wrecks, giving you the beta you need to find the coolest critters.
To join the party, you’ll need your Advanced Open Water certification and an excitement for adventure. Whether you're chasing that Type 2 fun or just looking to add a new chapter to your dive log, this night dive promises memories that will make you fall in love with night diving.

Wildlife Guidelines

Please be respectful of the fact that coral is a living organism and any standing, touching, or knocking over will irreparably damage the organism that takes a very long time to grow and is essential to our marine reefs. Please also be respectful of any marine animals including but not limited to turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins. Please never chase, harass, feed, or TOUCH any of the marine species. Enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path.

FAQs

What kind of marine life will I see at night?

Night diving in Honolulu opens up a whole new cast of ocean critters you might never spot during the day. You'll likely see octopuses creeping across the reef, moray eels out hunting, and crustaceans like spiny lobsters and crabs scuttling across the sea floor. Sleeping parrotfish tucked into their mucus cocoons are a common sight, along with squirrelfish and soldierfish flashing their big, reflective eyes in your dive light. If you're lucky, you might catch reef sharks cruising the deeper shadows or watch bioluminescent plankton sparkle to life around you with every kick of your fins. Some corals even open up and feed at night, giving the reef a totally different, alien-like appearance compared to the daytime.

Do I need any prior experience to participate?

Yes—you’ll need to have your Advanced Open Water Diver certification (or higher) to join this two-tank night dive. Night diving requires a specific set of skills like good buoyancy control, comfort navigating in low visibility, and the ability to manage lights and signals underwater. If you’re already certified for night diving, even better. This adventure is geared toward certified divers who are confident and experienced enough to handle the extra challenges (and epic rewards) of diving after dark. If you’re newer to diving or haven't done a night dive before, we recommend completing a night dive specialty course or logging a few daytime dives with us first!

Can I dive if I wear glasses?

Standard eyeglasses can’t be worn with a dive mask, but prescription masks are available for those who need vision correction while snorkeling. If you’re interested, consider looking into a prescription mask option before your tour. Alternatively, contact lenses can be worn under a dive mask, though it’s best to close your eyes if water enters to prevent losing a lens.

Can I dive with a mustache or beard?

You can dive with a beard or mustache but it can prevent a tight seal between the mask and your face, which may cause water to leak in. It is often recommended to shave at least your mustache before diving. If you’d prefer not to shave your mustache, please bring petroleum jelly or chapstick with you. If you coat your mustache in that chapstick or jelly, it may be able to seal and prevent water from getting in.

Can I fly after diving?

Flying directly after scuba diving is incredibly dangerous and could result in a life-threatening illness called the Bends/Decompression Sickness. The Divers Alert Network (DAN) guidelines for flying after diving include:

  • A single no-decompression dive, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000 ft (305 m) interval of 12 hours suggested.
  • Multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000ft (305m) interval of 18 hours is suggested.
  • Dives requiring decompression stops are recommended to have longer than 18 hours.

Please discuss with your dive guide ahead of time what is suggested!

Can I go hiking after diving?

Any activity that brings you above 1000 ft (305 m) can trigger the Bends/Decompression Sickness. Please check your hike elevation to ensure that at no time you will be going up in elevation. If the hike does go to elevation, you must treat it like a preflight interval as listed above in the flying FAQ.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.

Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’
