Description
Snowshoeing at 10,000' - Private Beginner-Friendly Snowshoe Hike - Trail Ridge Road
Trail Ridge Road closes to cars every winter, which means the only way to see certain stretches of it is on foot — or, in this case, on snowshoes. This hike takes you onto sections of one of the most famous roads in the country while it's buried in snow and empty of traffic, a version of the view that summer road-trippers never get to see.
Your guide leads the way through the snow-covered high country, sharing the geology and history of the landscape as you go, with sweeping views of snow-capped peaks in every direction. It's a quieter, slower way to experience elevation than the summer drive — no windshield, no other cars, just snow, sky, and the mountains around you.
Duration
- Total trip length: approximately 5.5 hours, including check-in, the drive to the trailhead, breaks, and snowshoeing time
Location / Where to Meet
- Guests are picked up directly for groups of fewer than 4 — pickup location entered at checkout, must be within Estes Park
- For groups of 4 or more, your guide establishes a meeting point in Estes Park or at the trailhead instead
- Exact trailhead and route are selected by your guide based on trip length, weather, snow conditions, and group needs
Ages & Requirements
- Minimum age: all ages welcome
- A legal parent or guardian must accompany any participant under 18
- This hike is well suited to families and first-time snowshoers — no prior snowshoeing experience is needed, and your guide fits everyone with gear before setting out
- Group size: 1–5 people per trip (winter group sizes are capped lower than summer/fall trips); every trip is a private, custom booking for your party only
- Because this hike reaches high elevation, guests should be prepared for thinner air, wind, and cold, changeable mountain weather

FAQs
What is this hike about?
This hike takes you onto sections of Trail Ridge Road that are closed to vehicles all winter, reaching around 10,000 feet in elevation — a view of the high country that's only accessible on foot or snowshoe once the road closes for the season.
Is this hike appropriate for young kids?
Yes — this is rated a family-friendly hike for all ages, with your guide setting the pace and fitting everyone with gear beforehand.
Do we need prior snowshoeing experience?
No — your guide fits you with gear and walks you through the basics before setting out.
Will we see wildlife on this hike?
Sightings aren't guaranteed, but elk, mule deer, and other wildlife remain active in the park through winter.
What can I expect to see and do on a guided hike?
Beyond the hiking itself, your guide shares knowledge of the local history, geology, flowers, and trees, and keeps an eye out for wildlife along the way. If animals are spotted while driving and it's safe to stop, your guide will pull over so the group can observe from a safe distance. Elk, mule deer, marmots, pikas, and bighorn sheep are commonly seen, with moose and other wildlife possible as well.
Are your guides certified?
Yes. Guides are professional, trained, and Wilderness First Aid/CPR-certified.
How big are the groups, and will I be with strangers?
Every trip is a private, custom trip booked exclusively for your party — you won't be combined with other travelers. Group sizes run from 1 to 9 people, based on Rocky Mountain National Park's group-size regulations for a single certified guide.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes, advance booking is recommended, especially during the busy summer season, to ensure guide and date availability.
Do I need a park pass?
You'll need a valid park pass or to pay the park entrance fee, but since you're on a guided trip, a timed-entry permit is not required — your guide handles that reservation for your group. Credit or debit is required at the park entrance; cash is not accepted.
