Description

Hermosa Creek Mountain Bike Tour near Durango, Colorado

The Hermosa Creek Trail is a Durango classic — a beloved local route that runs from the backside of Purgatory Ski Resort all the way to the small community of Hermosa, 10 miles north of downtown Durango. This guided, shuttle-assisted tour lets you ride all of it: roughly 18 miles through stunning mountain terrain, following Hermosa Creek through canyon walls, big mountain scenery, wildflowers, and the kind of singletrack that earns a trail its reputation.

Like all the best Durango Biking Adventures tours, this one comes loaded with "free vert" — the shuttle drops you at elevation so you earn a net descent without a grinding point-to-point climb. The numbers: approximately 1,500 vertical feet of climbing spread across the day, rewarded with 2,500 feet of total descending — the kind of free vert ratio that makes this tour genuinely special.

The day begins with a descent to Junction Creek for a water and snack break, then a significant climb to "High Point" where the group pauses to take in the views and have lunch. From there, a massive final descent carries you all the way back down to Durango. The shuttle driver meets the group at the bottom with snacks and cold drinks for the ride back into town.

This tour covers approximately 5–6 hours from pickup to drop-off. It is a serious day in the mountains and best suited for intermediate to expert riders ready for a full alpine effort.

FAQs

How difficult is the Hermosa Creek Trail?

The trail is intermediate to expert. At approximately 18 miles with technical sections, it requires solid fitness and comfort on singletrack. Your guide will support the group through the tougher segments, but this is not a beginner tour.

What does "free vert" mean?

The shuttle drives you to the top of the trail so you ride more down than up. Hermosa Creek delivers about 1,500 feet of climbing and 2,500 feet of descending across the full 18 miles — a favorable ratio that makes for a very satisfying day.

Where does the tour end?

The tour ends in Hermosa, a small community about 10 miles north of Durango. The shuttle driver meets the group there with snacks and cold drinks for the return to Durango.

What is the maximum group size?

Up to 5 people per tour.

Is a bike rental guaranteed for last-minute bookings?

Rentals cannot be guaranteed for bookings made within 24 hours. If a rental is unavailable, you will receive a full refund for the rental portion.

Why should we start in the morning?

A morning start allows the group to complete the trail before afternoon mountain weather moves in, and maximizes time on trail without rushing.

What is the weather policy?

If the operator cancels due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, guests receive a full refund or credit.

Do I need to sign a waiver?

Yes. All participants must complete and sign a waiver and pre-trip briefing before the tour. Details are provided in your booking confirmation.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made with at least 2 weeks notice will receive a refund minus a $20 fee. Cancellations made less than 2 weeks before the tour are non-refundable. No-shows will be charged the full amount. If Durango Biking Adventures cancels due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, guests receive a full refund or credit.
