Description
Heart of Minneapolis Kayak Tour – Mississippi River, MN
What puts "Minne" in Minneapolis? You'll find the answer on the water. This 2.5-hour out-and-back paddle on the Mississippi River traces the historic heart of the city from a perspective most residents have never seen — at river level, beneath the bridges, alongside the bluffs, and face to face with the skyline that grew up on the banks of this mighty river.
Your tour begins and ends at Boom Island Marina, a former railroad tie factory turned beloved green space just northeast of downtown. After a paddling skill introduction on land, you'll set off upriver past Nicollet Island, under a succession of bridges old and new — including the 8th Avenue and Broadway Street bridges — and toward the old industrial Port of Minneapolis on the Northside. Your guide will peel back the layers of history visible on the banks, pointing out landmarks written, washed away, and sometimes still standing along the shore.
On the return leg, the river's current carries you back downstream, treating you to one of the most distinctive close-up skyline views from anywhere in the city. Depending on conditions, the tour finishes with either a visit to the scenic Bassett Creek lagoon or a stretch down toward Owámniyomni — the falls of St. Anthony — the only true waterfall on the entire Mississippi River and the geographical reason Minneapolis exists at all. Your guide will bring the history and folklore of this remarkable place to life from start to finish.
This is a great all-around tour for locals and visitors alike — accessible to beginners, rich in history, and finished with a skyline view that's impossible to find anywhere else in town.

FAQs
What is the Heart of Minneapolis tour route?
This is an out-and-back tour that begins and ends at Boom Island marina. You'll paddle upriver past Nicollet Island, under the 8th Avenue and Broadway Street bridges, and toward the old industrial Port of Minneapolis on the Northside. On the return, the current carries you back downstream past the Hennepin Avenue Bridge and toward the Grain Belt Brewery landmark, finishing with either a visit to Bassett Creek lagoon or a stretch toward the falls of St. Anthony, depending on conditions.
What is the falls of St. Anthony / Owámniyomni?
The falls of St. Anthony — known as Owámniyomni in the Dakota language — is the only naturally occurring waterfall on the entire Mississippi River, and the reason Minneapolis exists where it does. The power of the falls drove the flour milling industry that built the city in the 19th century. Depending on conditions, your tour may reach a vantage point above the falls, giving you a close-up view of this remarkable landmark.
Is this tour suitable for beginners and families?
Yes — the Heart of Minneapolis is one of the most accessible tours offered. The route is calm and manageable, the pace is relaxed, and a paddling introduction is included. Children age 5 and up are welcome in tandem kayaks with an adult paddler 18 or older.
Will photos be taken during the tour?
Yes! Your guide carries a waterproof camera and will take photos of your group during the paddle. You're also welcome to bring your own waterproof camera. A dry bag and cell phone cases are provided for items you want to keep close but protected from the water.
Where can I leave my personal belongings during the tour?
A dry bag is available to store small personal items you'd like to keep with you on the water. Leave larger items and valuables in your vehicle at the Boom Island Park parking area.
