Description

Red Canyon & Lower Shoshone River - 12-Mile Whitewater Rafting in Cody, WY

Winding through the heart of Wyoming’s wild landscapes, the Shoshone River is a hidden gem fed by snowmelt from the Absaroka Mountains. It’s a river with a story—one that carves its way through ancient canyon walls, past layers of volcanic ash, and into a corridor steeped in Native history and rugged frontier lore - everything that makes a great Wyoming river trip.
On this half-day adventure, you'll experience the Red Canyon, one of the most scenic and exciting stretches of the Shoshone, and what put river rafting in Cody, WY on the map. This Class II–III whitewater adventure begins with a scenic drive along the historic Black to Yellow Highway, a lesser-known route steeped in Wild West history. Along the way, you’ll pass craters from extinct geysers, ancient teepees and ceremonial rings, and fascinating rock formations that showcase the area’s volcanic and geological past.  Between rapids, soak in the high desert beauty: red rock walls streaked with bentonite, hidden side canyons, and cliffs shaped by glacial forces and fault lines.

After an exciting first stretch, you’ll pause for  a gourmet deli-style picnic lunch at a beautiful riverside picnic area, before continuing into the lower Shoshone—home to some of the trip’s most exciting whitewater. Rapids like Colter’s Falls, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and Little Big Drop deliver an exhilarating ride through canyons shaped by glaciers, fault lines, and layers of bentonite clay. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned paddler, white water rafting in Cody, Wyoming, is the perfect way to connect with the power, beauty, and stories of the Shoshone River.

For an extra splash of adventure, hop into one of our inflatable kayaks—also known as duckies—and take on the Red Canyon one-on-one with the river! Paddling your own duckie puts you closer to the waves and adds an exciting challenge to the Class II–III rapids. Whether you're looking to test your skills or just want a more active, hands-on ride, this is the perfect way to elevate your half-day rafting experience. No prior kayaking experience required—just bring your sense of adventure!

FAQs

What’s the difference between the Red Canyon 12-Mile Trip and the Shoshone 7-Mile Trip?

The 12-mile Red Canyon Trip is a longer, half-day adventure that combines scenic canyon views, fascinating geology, and fun Class II–III whitewater. It includes a drive along the historic Black to Yellow Highway and ends with the most exciting rapids on the Lower Shoshone. The 7-mile Shoshone Trip focuses on just that final section—packed with nearly continuous whitewater like Colter’s Falls and Little Big Drop. It's shorter, more fast-paced, and ideal for those looking for a shorter trip.

Do I need prior experience to go white water rafting in Cody, WY?

Nope! The Shoshone River is beginner-friendly and guided by experienced professionals. The Red Canyon Trip is great for first-timers looking for a mix of scenery and adventure, while the 7-Mile Trip offers a more adrenaline-focused introduction to whitewater. Both are great optinons for first-time white water rafting in Cody, WY.

Can I try an inflatable kayak (duckie)?

Absolutely! For an additional $10 per person, you can choose to paddle your own inflatable kayak for an extra challenge. It’s a great way to level up the adventure and get a more hands-on experience.

Do trips run in the rain?

Yes! Rafting is a water sport, so a little rain doesn’t stop the fun. In fact, some of the best whitewater happens during spring runoff. We only cancel for lightning or extreme weather conditions.
