Description

Explore Both the La Coca Falls & Yokahú Observation Tower in El Yunque!

Step into Puerto Rico’s only tropical rainforest on this half-day hiking adventure through El Yunque National Forest. With special access to the 191 Recreational and Ecological Area, you’ll explore lush jungle trails, cascading rivers, and historic landmarks that make this place unlike anywhere else in the U.S. National Forest system. Over four hours, your guide will bring the rainforest’s incredible biodiversity to life, from towering tree ferns and mountain palms to the sound of coquí frogs echoing through the canopy.
Highlights include La Coca Falls, where water plunges 85 ft (26 m) over giant rock formations — a perfect stop for photos and soaking in the raw power of the forest. From there, climb the Yokahú Observation Tower, a 69-foot (21 m) stone lookout that opens to sweeping, unobstructed views across the rainforest and out toward the Atlantic. These are the same vistas that awed Spanish settlers centuries ago, and they remain just as breathtaking today.
The adventure continues along a shaded trail where you’ll see the rainforest up close — think dense greenery, hidden streams, and native plants everywhere you look. To cap it off, refresh with a swim in a clear mountain river, a true El Yunque classic. With a mix of sightseeing, light hiking, and time to relax in nature, this tour is ideal for families, friends, and anyone who wants to experience the best of Puerto Rico’s rainforest in one unforgettable morning or afternoon.

ADVENTURE PROVIDED BY Seeing Puerto Rico

FAQs

What are the maximum and minimum ages?

The minimum age is 3 years. Due to uneven terrain, unstable weather due to rain, and walking distances, this tour is not recommended for children under 3 yrs. Please assess your child’s ability to walk long distances and be in a car for extended periods of time before signing up for this tour. There is no maximum age, please take into consideration no matter the age that this tour requires some physical effort.

Will the tour go out if it rains?

Yes, unless the Forest Service determines that the rains are too copious and represent a danger for visitors, we will go out with rain. As it is a Rain Forest, the probability of rain during the tour is high, be prepared for that.

Are there bathrooms in the forest?

Yes, but please note that there is considerable distance between them. We will make stops before and after the tour.

How difficult is the hike to La Coca Falls and the Yokahú Observation Tower?

Reaching La Coca Falls requires virtually no hiking — the waterfall sits right off Road 191 with a paved parking area next to it. You’ll only need to walk a few steps from the vehicle to see the 85-foot cascade, making it accessible to almost everyone, including families with kids. The terrain here is flat and easy, though the rocks near the base can be slippery if you want to explore closer for photos.

The Yokahú Observation Tower also doesn’t involve a strenuous hike. The tower itself stands 69 feet tall with 98 interior steps that spiral to the top. While it’s a steady climb, most visitors of average fitness can handle it at a relaxed pace in just a few minutes. The tower is perched at 1,575 feet of elevation, so the reward for that short climb is a sweeping panoramic view over the rainforest canopy and toward the coast. Neither stop requires strenuous trekking — they’re more sightseeing and light walking than hiking.

What is special about the 191 Recreational and Ecological Area?

The 191 Recreational and Ecological Area is a protected corridor within El Yunque that requires a special permit for access, which makes tours here unique. Unlike the busier, more crowded sections of the forest, this area feels quieter and more immersive. The corridor follows the historic PR-191 road, which once stretched across the entire forest before landslides and preservation measures closed the central portion. Today, it provides controlled entry into some of the most pristine parts of El Yunque.

What makes it special is that you’re stepping into a zone where conservation and recreation meet. You’ll pass the Forest Service’s official checkpoint and then continue into areas managed specifically for both ecological preservation and guided exploration. That means fewer crowds, better-maintained stops, and the chance to explore iconic features like La Coca Falls, Yokahú Tower, and natural swimming holes without the stress of overcrowding.

What kind of wildlife might I see along the way in El Yunque?

El Yunque is one of the most biologically diverse forests in the U.S. National Forest system, so wildlife sightings are common. Birdwatchers often spot the Puerto Rican woodpecker, bananaquit, and the colorful Puerto Rican tody. The forest is also famous for the tiny coquí frog — you’ll likely hear its distinct “ko-kee” call even if you don’t see one. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the endangered Puerto Rican parrot, one of the rarest birds in the world.

Along the trails, keep an eye out for anoles (small lizards that dart across the path), freshwater shrimp in the streams, and stick insects camouflaged among the ferns. The plant life itself is part of the wildlife experience — from giant tree ferns and tabonuco trees to over 240 plant species found only in Puerto Rico. While you won’t find large mammals here, the forest’s dense greenery, birdsong, and amphibian life create an atmosphere that feels alive at every turn.
