Description

Half-Day Guided Knik River Kayaking & SUP Tour near Anchorage

Paddle the "original highways of Alaska" on a half-day kayak or paddleboarding trip through the glacier-formed Knik River Valley. This is your guides' most popular summer trip, and it's easy to see why — the route strings together a quiet lake, a slow-moving creek nicknamed the "Bayou of Alaska," river delta sand dunes, and a stretch of the glacier-fed Knik River itself, all backed by views of the massive Knik Glacier in the distance.

The journey begins with a paddle across Jim Lake before a short portage carries you to the creek, where the water slows to a lazy, winding pace through marshland — a peaceful stretch that feels worlds away from the open river ahead. From there, the route opens into a river delta and sand dunes, where the silty, glacier-carved landscape frames some of the best views of Knik Glacier on the whole trip. The final stretch drops you onto the Knik River itself, a glacier-fed waterway with a current strong enough to carry you steadily downstream through the valley.

Throughout the paddle, keep your eyes on the water and shoreline — this stretch of the Mat-Su Valley is home to river otters, beavers, bald eagles, salmon, ducks, owls, porcupines, moose, and coyotes. Snacks and hot and cold drinks are served along the way, giving you a chance to soak in the mountain scenery before the final push back to the bridge.

FAQs

Is transportation from Anchorage included?

Transportation is not included in the tour price. Your guides offer a round-trip shuttle from downtown Anchorage for an additional flat fee of $175 per group (1–6 people). The shuttle meets guests at the downtown Anchorage Visitor's Center (the Log Cabin) and is roughly a 45-minute ride each way to the meeting point. Shuttle service is also available from Palmer or Wasilla for $85. Shuttle service must be requested and scheduled in advance.

Do I need previous paddling experience?

No prior experience is needed for these trips. They're designed to welcome beginners, and your guide will cover paddling basics before you head out on the water.

How far in advance do I need to make a reservation?

Online reservations must be made by 5 PM the day before your scheduled tour.

What wildlife might we see on the Knik River?

Your guides paddle through glacier-formed lakes, marshlands, and river systems where river otters, beavers, bald eagles, salmon, ducks, owls, porcupines, moose, bears, and coyotes have all been spotted. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the terrain is prime wildlife habitat.

What is the route for this tour?

The half-day trip starts and ends at Old Knik Bridge. After check-in, guests are transferred to Jim Lake, paddle across it, and take a short, easy portage to a slow-moving creek. From there the route follows a river delta and sand dunes — offering some of the best photo opportunities of Knik Glacier — before finishing on the glacier-fed Knik River itself, which has a strong but slow-moving current back to the bridge.

Is this trip physically demanding?

It's rated moderately strenuous. Depending on water levels, guests may need to carry or tow their paddle craft and walk through loose glacier silt or sand for up to a quarter mile in the dune section.

Are there restrooms along the route?

There is one port-a-potty near Jim Lake. Beyond that, there are no facilities along the route, so guests should plan accordingly.

Can I jump in the river to cool off?

No — the Knik River is glacier-fed and stays very cold, so swimming isn't recommended.

Is food provided?

Assorted hot and cold drinks and snacks are included. This trip does not include a full meal (see the full-day version of this tour for a trip that includes lunch).
