Description

Private Half-Day Family Rock Climbing Tour – Guided Climbing for Kids 5 & Up

There's something specific that happens when a kid gets to the top of their first real climb. The look back down, the recognition of what they just did, the immediate declaration that they want to do it again — it's one of those outdoor moments that's hard to replicate anywhere else. The Half-Day Family Rock Climbing Tour is built to create exactly that, for families with children as young as 5.

This isn't a scaled-down version of an adult tour. It's a climbing experience designed from the ground up for families, adapted in pace, in approach, and in the way guides communicate with younger climbers. Putting on a harness and ascending a vertical cliff with young kids requires a different kind of guidance than a standard climbing day, and the guides here have spent decades doing it. They're trained specifically in family and youth outdoor experiences, undergo annual assessment, and bring the patience, humor, and technical skill that makes the difference between a good day and one the kids talk about for years.

Routes are selected based on your family's ages and energy. It's beginner-friendly and accessible for young children, with room to push it further for older or more confident kids in the group. No climbing experience is needed for anyone, adults included. Guides cover the fundamentals along the way: how to tie in, how the belay device works, and how to move on the rock. The bulk of the time is spent climbing.

The half-day is perfect for younger kids, families juggling a full Zion itinerary, or those who want a real taste of climbing without committing to a full day. All family tours are private — just your family, your guide, and the rock.

FAQs

How young is too young for rock climbing?

The minimum age is 5, and guides have worked successfully with children across that full range. That said, the experience is most meaningful for kids who are genuinely curious and physically capable of gripping, stepping, and pulling their way up a route — which most active 5-year-olds absolutely can be. Guides adapt to the individual child, not just the group average.

Do kids need any climbing experience?

No experience is needed for anyone in the group — kids or adults. Guides introduce everything from scratch in a way that makes sense for younger participants.

What's the difference between the half-day and full-day family climbing tour?

The half-day covers a focused climbing session — enough for kids to get comfortable on the rock, work through a few routes, and leave with real excitement and confidence. The full-day gives more time for skill building, more routes, and a bigger sense of accomplishment. The right choice depends on your kids' ages, stamina, and how big a day you're looking for.

How far in advance should I book?

Early reservations are strongly advised. Summer dates (June–August) fill 30–45 days in advance. Book early to secure your preferred date and start time.

Cancellation Policy

Full payment is due at the time of booking. Cancellations more than 3 days in advance will receive a full refund. Cancellations within 72 hours of trip start time are non-refundable. Weather conditions do not permit clients to cancel trips. If your Zion Adventures® guide determines conditions make the event unsafe, we will reschedule or make every effort to provide a comparable experience; if not possible, all purchases will be refunded in full.
