Description
Watch the Sunrise Above the Clouds, Then Ride the Volcano to the Sea!
Start your day above the clouds at one of the most spectacular sunrise locations in the world before experiencing Maui's most famous downhill bike ride. This full-day adventure combines two of the island's most iconic experiences—watching the first light of day spread across the summit of Haleakalā National Park and then descending from the slopes of the volcano all the way toward the North Shore by bicycle.
Before dawn, you'll travel to the 10,023-foot (3,055 m) summit of Haleakalā, where you'll watch the sun rise over the volcanic crater while your guide shares stories about the mountain's geology, Hawaiian cultural significance, and the rare plants and wildlife found nowhere else on Earth, including the remarkable silversword. After sunrise, you'll descend to approximately 6,500 feet (1,981 m), where you'll receive your bike, gear, and safety briefing before beginning the cycling portion of the adventure.
The ride follows Maui's legendary downhill route through the famous 29 Haleakalā switchbacks, giving you two opportunities to enjoy the mountain's most exhilarating section before continuing through rolling ranchlands, the agricultural community of Kula, and the historic paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town of Makawao, where you'll have time to stop for breakfast or coffee. The final miles carry you through pineapple fields and colorful flowering trees before finishing in the North Shore town of Pāʻia, completing approximately 26 miles (42 km) of mostly downhill riding.
Although the route requires very little pedaling, it is designed for riders who are comfortable handling a bicycle on public roads. You'll descend grades averaging 5–6% while sharing winding mountain roads with vehicle traffic. For confident riders, this tour offers one of the most memorable ways to experience Maui—from sunrise above the clouds to an unforgettable ride from the volcano nearly to the sea.

FAQs
What do I wear for this bike tour?
You can wear anything that will make you feel comfortable. However, closed-toed shoes and helmets are the only mandatory attire. Gloves, windbreakers, and windproof pants are highly recommended. Keep in mind that the temperatures in the early morning can be quite brisk and, when combined with the downhill speeds, you may find it chilly.
Jackets, sweatshirts, jeans, leggings, long-sleeved shirts, and the like are all safe options. Dressing in layers is always a good idea.
Check the weather before your tour and dress accordingly.
Do I need previous biking experience to join this tour?
Yes. Riders should have prior experience riding a bicycle downhill, since the ride includes an average grade of 5–6% along with switchbacks, winding roads, and stretches with no bike lane or shoulder. You'll need to feel confident controlling your bike alongside other vehicles.
Do we go all the way to the summit for sunrise viewing?
Yes — this is the only one of the four Haleakalā bike tours that includes the 10,000 ft summit inside Haleakalā National Park, where you'll watch the sunrise before descending to the 6,500 ft launch point to begin biking.
Do I ride down from the summit itself?
No — after the sunrise, you're driven back down to the 6,500 ft launch point, where the guided bike ride begins.
Why should I book the Haleakalā Sunrise Bike Tour instead of the regular downhill ride?
The Sunrise Bike Tour combines two of Maui's most iconic experiences into one unforgettable adventure. Before your bike ride begins, you'll travel to the summit of Haleakalā National Park to watch the sunrise from above the clouds while learning about the volcano's unique geology, native wildlife, and Hawaiian cultural significance from your guide. After sunrise, you'll descend to the bike launch point and enjoy the complete downhill cycling experience through Maui's scenic Upcountry.
If seeing the sunrise from Haleakalā has always been on your bucket list, this tour allows you to experience it while also enjoying Maui's famous downhill bike ride—all in a single morning.
How cold is it at the Haleakalā summit for sunrise?
Even though Maui is a tropical island, the summit of Haleakalā sits at 10,023 ft (3,055 m) above sea level, where temperatures before sunrise are often between 30–50°F (-1 to 10°C). Wind can make it feel even colder, especially while waiting for sunrise.
We recommend dressing in warm layers that can easily be removed later in the day as temperatures rise. Closed-toe shoes, long pants, and a warm jacket are strongly encouraged. Once you begin descending the mountain by bike, you'll gradually warm up as you lose elevation and enter Maui's milder Upcountry climate.
What happens if it's cloudy or the sunrise is blocked?
Weather on Haleakalā can change quickly, and while sunrise conditions are often spectacular, cloud cover is always possible. Even on cloudier mornings, many guests still enjoy an unforgettable experience as the changing colors of the sky, dramatic volcanic landscape, and unique atmosphere of Haleakalā create an incredible setting unlike anywhere else in Hawaii.
After sunrise, the adventure continues with the guided downhill bike ride through Maui's scenic Upcountry, including panoramic mountain views, rolling ranchlands, historic Makawao, and the famous Haleakalā switchbacks. Even if the sunrise isn't perfectly clear, the bike tour itself remains one of Maui's signature outdoor experiences.
Why does the bike ride start at approximately 6,500 feet (1,981 m) instead of the summit?
While you'll visit the 10,023-foot (3,055 m) summit of Haleakalā National Park to watch the sunrise, all commercial bike tours begin at approximately 6,500 feet (1,981 m), just outside the National Park entrance. This is required by National Park regulations and applies to every commercial bike operator on Maui.
After enjoying sunrise at the summit, you'll travel down to the bike launch point where you'll receive your safety briefing, be fitted with your bicycle and equipment, and begin the downhill ride. From there, you'll still experience approximately 26 miles (42 km) of mostly downhill riding through some of Maui's most beautiful scenery, making it one of the island's classic adventures.
