Description

Step Beyond the Overlooks & Hike Across Haleakalā’s Otherworldly Summit!

Don't just stand at an overlook and look into Haleakalā—lace up your hiking boots and experience the volcano on foot. This guided adventure combines two distinctly different hikes inside Haleakalā National Park, taking you from the stark volcanic landscape near the summit to a lower-elevation lava trail filled with some of Hawaii's rarest plant life. Together, the two hikes cover approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) and reveal just how dramatically the mountain changes within a few thousand feet of elevation.

Your first hike begins near Haleakalā's approximately 10,000-foot (3,048 m) summit, where enormous cinder cones, volcanic rock, and sweeping crater views create a landscape that can feel more like another planet than tropical Maui. You'll walk roughly 2 miles (3.2 km) through this high-elevation environment while your naturalist guide helps uncover the story written into the rocks—from the volcanic forces that built Haleakalā to the unusual conditions that allow life to survive at the summit. With little vegetation and immense open space, you'll also get to experience the remarkable stillness and quiet for which Haleakalā is famous.

Then you'll descend to approximately 8,000 feet (2,438 m) for a completely different 2-mile (3.2 km) hike. Here, the barren summit begins giving way to rare native vegetation growing among ancient lava formations. Keep watch for species adapted specifically to Haleakalā's harsh environment while your guide explains the mountain's ecology, conservation efforts, and natural history. The journey also includes a look at the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, one of the world's most advanced facilities for studying the sun.

The elevation is part of what makes this adventure extraordinary—and challenging. You'll be hiking across rugged volcanic terrain at elevations reaching approximately 10,000 feet (3,048 m), where temperatures can be dramatically colder than at Maui's beaches and thinner air makes hiking noticeably more demanding. For capable hikers ready to trade the coastline for cinder cones, lava fields, rare Hawaiian plants, and enormous mountain views, this is one of the most immersive ways to experience Haleakalā National Park.

Duration

  1. Total tour time: 7 Hours, including van transport up and down the mountain
  2. On-trail time: two separate 2-mile hikes (4 miles / 6.4 km total) — one at the 10,000-ft (3048 m) summit and one at 8,000 ft (2438 m) along a lava trail.

Location / Where to Meet

  1. Meeting Point: Kahului Park & Ride, Kahului, HI 96732, United States
  2. This is an open commuter parking lot along a concrete wall on Highway 380, just west of Highway 311 — look for the row of parking against the wall.
  3. Hotel pickup is available for an extra fee per person and is subject to availability.
  4. Guests are driven up to Haleakalā National Park as part of the tour!

Ages & Requirements

  1. Minimum age: 8 years old
  2. Difficulty: Challenging — more demanding due to rugged terrain, significant elevation, total mileage, elevation gain/loss, and length of time in the van.
  3. Participants must be able to hike unaided over uneven volcanic terrain.
  4. Due to the summit elevation (approximately 10,000 ft), those with respiratory or cardiac conditions should consult a doctor before booking.
  5. Dress in layers — summit temperatures are significantly colder and windier than at sea level.

What's Included

  1. Naturalist guide for both hikes
  2. Van transportation to and from Haleakalā National Park
  3. Lunch & snacks
  4. Backpack
  5. Poncho, in case of rain
  6. Insect repellent, if needed
  7. Hand sanitizer

Not Included

  1. Gratuity — never expected, but if you have a great experience, consider gifting 10–25% to your guide and driver!
  2. Hotel pickup/drop-off — can be added at checkout for an extra fee per person if available (select resort areas only).

What to Bring / Wear

  1. Sturdy Hiking Shoes – Broken-in, closed-toe shoes with good traction are essential for uneven volcanic terrain. No open-toe sandals.
  1. Hiking Socks – Comfortable, moisture-wicking socks will help prevent blisters; low gaiters can also help keep volcanic rocks and grit out of your shoes.
  2. Warm, Layered Clothing – Conditions at 10,000 ft (3,048 m) can be dramatically colder and windier than at sea level. Bring long pants, a warm fleece or insulated layer, beanie, and lightweight gloves.
  3. Rain & Wind Protection – Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho for quickly changing mountain weather.
  4. Sun Protection – A brimmed hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen are important at high elevation, where sun exposure can be intense.
  5. Reusable Water Bottle or Hydration Bladder – Bring plenty of water for hiking at altitude.
  6. Trekking Poles (Optional) – Helpful if you prefer additional stability on rocky or uneven volcanic terrain.
  7. Camera & Binoculars (Optional) – Great for crater views, volcanic landscapes, native plants, and wildlife.
  8. Required ID & Paperwork – Bring any identification, waivers, or medical forms required for your tour.
  9. Leave Valuables Behind – Avoid bringing unnecessary jewelry or anything you wouldn't want to lose or damage on the trail.

FAQs

How difficult is this hike, and what are the physical requirements?

This is the most physically demanding of our standard tours, covering four miles total across two separate hikes at high elevation. Participants should be comfortable walking unaided on uneven, rocky volcanic terrain for extended periods.

Will it be cold at the summit?

Yes — temperatures at Haleakalā's roughly 10,000-foot summit can be significantly colder and windier than at sea level, even when it's warm on the coast. Dressing in layers is strongly recommended.

Are dogs allowed on this tour?

No. Haleakalā National Park prohibits dogs on its trails to protect native wildlife.

What will I see along the way?

The summit hike crosses a desert-like landscape of massive cinder cones, while the second hike follows a lava trail lined with rare native plants at 8,000 feet. The route also passes the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope.

How high up does this hike go, and should I be concerned about elevation?

The tour reaches approximately 10,000 feet at the summit. Those with respiratory or heart conditions, or anyone unaccustomed to elevation, should check with a doctor before booking.

Do you offer hotel transportation?

Hotel pickup and drop-off is available on select tours, subject to availability, for an extra fee at checkout. Transportation covers major resort hotels and condominiums but not private residences or towns outside the service area. Vehicles are PUC-certified, commercially insured, and cleaned between tours.

Do I need to bring anything on the tour?

Bring water, a towel if your tour includes swimming, and reef-safe sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide-based sunscreens are recommended). A camera or phone is fine to bring — just pack it in a resealable bag or dry bag to protect it from moisture. You're responsible for any personal gear you choose to bring along.

Does your guide provide gear and food for the tour?

Your guide provides most of what you need for a comfortable day outdoors, including snacks (or lunch, depending on the tour), a backpack, a poncho in case of rain, insect repellent when needed, and hand sanitizer.
