FAQs

Do I need to know how to swim or snorkel?

All participants should be comfortable in the water but swimming is not necessary for snorkel tours. Snorkelers will be provided with life vests and, if preferred, fun noodles for flotation. Guides will instruct guests on snorkeling techniques for beginners.

What can I see on the snorkel tour?

We often see tropical fishes like parrotfish, blue tangs, hogfish, squirrelfish, butterflyfish, and angelfish. We have the occasional stingray, tarpon, and turtle swim by checking you out. Look in the crevices for eels, crabs, and lobsters.

Why should I go with a guide instead of snorkeling on my own?

Do you want to know what that fish is called? Where to find the best reef? What can you expect to see? Our snorkeling guides are PADI-certified professionals with years of experience teaching and guiding snorkeling tours around the world. Our pro tips can mean the difference between an average experience and one you will remember for a very long time.

Do we take a boat?

No boat is required to get to the beautiful reefs of Aguadilla and Rincón. We wade in from the beach and swim to the reefs.

Do you have military discounts?

Yes, we do. To thank you for your service, we give a 10% discount to the service member on any tour or dive course. Please let the desk agent checking you in know that you are an active duty or retired service member to receive your discount. Be ready to show your military ID.

How large are your groups?

Our groups are typically small. For snorkeling tours, there is a maximum number of snorkelers per guide that is usually no more than 12. If there are more than 12 in your group, additional guides will be added for safety.

Can I participate if pregnant?

Pregnancy does not necessarily preclude you from participating in a snorkeling tour. A certain level of fitness is necessary so if you feel snorkeling during pregnancy will be a risk, please abstain. We reserve the right to refuse participation if it endangers the safety of the participants.

Do I need a wetsuit?

Water temperature in Puerto Rico ranges from 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter months (December-March) to 84 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer months. Most divers get cold in the winter months and a wetsuit is recommended. At other times of the year, wetsuits are good for abrasion protection. Wetsuits are available for rental for an additional fee, check out our rental rates for more information.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.

Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’

Are there sharks?

Shark incidents in Puerto Rico’s waters are extremely rare, and serious injuries are even rarer. When you enter the ocean, it’s important to remember that it’s a natural, wild environment with many types of marine life, including sharks. Although the chances of a shark-related injury are very low, they are still part of the ocean’s ecosystem, and the ocean should be approached with respect. By learning about sharks and following safety guidelines, you can minimize even this small risk.

Can you go underwater with a snorkel?

Yes, snorkels allow you to breathe with your face in the water at the surface. If you’d like to dive down, though, water will enter the snorkel, so you’ll need to hold your breath until you resurface. Once back at the surface, you can clear the snorkel by blowing out the air in your mouth hard. That should clear the snorkel, but if it doesn’t, tread the water, remove the snorkel from your mouth and dump the mouthpiece out.

Can I snorkel if I wear glasses?

Standard eyeglasses can’t be worn with a snorkel mask, but prescription masks are available for those who need vision correction while snorkeling. If you’re interested, consider looking into a prescription mask option before your tour. Alternatively, contact lenses can be worn under a snorkel mask, though it’s best to close your eyes if water enters to prevent losing a lens.

Can you rent me equipment so I can go out snorkeling on my own?

If you are an experienced snorkeler and want to rent equipment to do a self-guided tour, we have a full rental locker available to suit your needs. Rentals are for a 24-hour period and early returns are accepted before 5:00 PM (no after-hour returns). You must present a dive certification to rent tanks, regulators, and BCDs. Please find our rental options here.
